Sherif is a former semifinalist at this event, achieving this feat in 2021 when she lost to Anna Bondar in three sets.

This was the 28-year-old's 37th match win at all levels and it comes on the back of a semifinal run in Colina, Chile this past week.

Kristina Mladenovic sits over 100 spots below Sherif in the WTA rankings and safely progressed into the second round in Buenos Aires.

Mladenovic beat Carolina Alves of Brazil 7-6, 6-1 in match that lasted two hours.

The first set was a real marathon, taking 78 minutes, which Mladenovic won after rallying from 2-4 down and snatching the tie-break.

The Frenchwoman was in total command in the second set, breaking Alves twice and not dropping her own serve.

This was only her second win from four tournaments on South American soil this month.

The last proper run she's had on the dirt at this level was a couple of years ago when she reached the last eight in Iasi. Still, you cannot rule her out from extracting the errors from Sherif whose game was all over the place in the win over Strakhova. I'm all in for the Egyptian to win this match, but three sets looks like the order of the day.
