Italy will face Australia in the second semifinal at the 2024 Davis Cup Finals in Malaga, Spain. The tie is scheduled to take place on Saturday, November 23, 2024. Here's our Italy vs. Australia Davis Cup prediction. This preview will also contain an Italy vs. Australia pick.
Italy Davis Cup Team Facts
Italy defeated Argentina 2-1 in the quarterfinal thanks to the heroics of Jannik Sinner and Matteo Berrettini in doubles. The Argentines took a shock lead when Francisco Cerundolo downed Lorenzo Musetti in the first singles rubber.
But World No. 1 Sinner levelled the tie by dismantling Sebastian Baez 6-2, 6-1. The 23-year-old completed the rescue act for his country and teamed up with Berretini to beat the experienced pair of Andres Molteni and Maximo Gonzalez in the decisive doubles 6-4, 7-5.
Italy has now set up a rematch of last year's final with Australia.
Australia Davis Cup Team Facts
Australia earned a shock win over the USA in the other quarterfinal to reach the semifinal stage of the Davis Cup for a third year in a row.
Lleyton Hewitt's side scored the first point in the tie against the Americans when Thanasi Kokkinakis won the heavy-hitting battle against Ben Shelton 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 in over two hours. Kokkinakis saved four match points and prevailed in the longest tie-break in the competition in five years.
It was the USA's top-ranked man, Taylor Fritz, who restored parity with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Alex de Minaur in just over an hour. USA team captain Bob Bryan came under heavy criticism when he decided to make a late switch in the doubles, picking Shelton and Tommy Paul in place of the original pairing of Rajeev Ram and Austin Krajicek, who are the renowned doubles specialists.
The decision worked in Australia's favor as they won the doubles rubber with Matthew Ebden and Jordan Thompson emerging as the heroes.
Italy vs Australia Davis Cup Head-To-Head
• These two nations have met 13 times in total in Davis Cup history.
• Australia leads Italy 8-5, winning seven of their ties on grass.
• However, Italy defeated Australia 2-0 in last year's final to win its first Davis Cup in almost 50 years.
Italy vs Australia Davis Cup Prediction
Italy's team captain Filippo Volandri's bravery with the team selections was bold, deciding against sticking with Bolelli and Vavassori for doubles against Argentina. But in truth, it shouldn't have come to that if Musetti had taken care of business in singles.
Sinner almost guarantees the country one point in the tie here, and I would imagine Berrettini will have to take Musetti's place in the other singles match. Give me Italy to power past Australia for the second year in a row.
