Dominic Thiem and Luciano Darderi meet in the first round of the 2024 Vienna Open in Austria on Tuesday, October 22, 2024. Here's our Dominic Thiem vs Luciano Darderi prediction. This article will also contain a Dominic Thiem vs Luciano Darderi pick.
Dominic Thiem vs Luciano Darderi Preview
Dominic Thiem is playing in his final tournament as a pro. For at least a decade, Thiem has been the standard bearer of Austrian tennis, winning his only Grand Slam title at the 2020 US Open.
At his peak, he was ranked a career-high World No. 3 and troubled the famous trio of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic across all surfaces. But since shutting down his season three summers ago in Mallorca because of a wrist injury, Thiem has not been the same player upon his return.
He has played 23 matches this season and has won only eight. Last year, he was beaten in the first round of the Vienna Open by Stefanos Tsitsipas. But he has fond memories of his home tournament because he won the title back in 2019 and has made the quarterfinal stage at least three more times.
Luciano Darderi will look to gatecrash the party in front of Thiem's home supporters. The Italian obviously has one job to do on Tuesday as he looks to finish a career-best season on a high. As Thiem winds down on his career, Darderi is only just getting started.
The 22-year-old is set for his Vienna Open debut. He has compiled a 40-28 record for the season but has never won a main draw match on the ATP Tour.

• Dominic Thiem and Luciano Darderi have no previous history. This will be their first and last career meeting.
Dominic Thiem vs Luciano Darderi Prediction
One of Austria's most accomplished tennis players will bring the curtain down on a fantastic career. It hasn't been the dream farewell season Thiem anticipated when he announced his retirement a few months ago, with only eight wins from 23 matches. He enters his last professional tournament with a wretched record of six straight losses. But despite that dreadful run, it's still surprising to see Darderi instilled as the sizable favorite here. The Italian just doesn't perform on this surface and in these conditions. Backing Thiem at +142 to turn back the clock and deliver that rasping backhand in front of his home faithful one more time is too good a price to turn down.
