Novak Djokovic will face Matthew Ebden in the first round of the 2024 Paris Olympics tennis tournament. The match is scheduled for Saturday, July 27, 2024. Here's our Novak Djokovic vs Matthew Ebden prediction.
Novak Djokovic vs Matthew Ebden Preview
Novak Djokovic is competing in his fifth Olympics. He is a Bronze Medalist from the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Djokovic has underperformed massively in each of his next three Olympics, and several fans believe this is his last realistic shot at a Gold Medal.
It's the one missing big title from his impressive resume. Djokovic will return to Roland Garros, as that is where the Olympics tennis tournamnet will be held this year. He could not complete the French Open when he played in June because of a knee injury and has to withdraw before his quarterfinal match. He'll be hoping for a more successful campaign for the next one week.
Matthew Ebden of Australia will be the man tasked to cause the upset of the tournament. Ebden is a veteran and at 36, is only a year younger than Djokovic. He will be playing in his first Olympics in singles.
Remarkably, this will be his first singles match in two years. The former World No. 39 is an experienced doubles operator and has transitioned to that field full-time in the last five years and only got into the main draw by virtue of a significant number of withdrawals in the Olympics entry list. Nonetheless, he will enjoy this occasion and shared his "shock" reaction on social media upon learning he will play Djokovic and potentially Rafael Nadal in the second round if he gets there.
Novak Djokovic vs Matthew Ebden Head-To-Head
• Djokovic and Ebden have never played each other on the ATP Tour.
Novak Djokovic vs Matthew Ebden Prediction
This will be Ebden's first experience of the Olympic Games in singles. He doesn't play singles these days, and the organizers had to instill some doubles players to fill the singles draw. That being said, Djokovic will be motivated to win his first Olympics Gold Medal. He's been close on a couple of occasions. And having recovered from knee surgery (still wearing a knee brace), I can't see anything but a straightforward win for the top seed.
