Three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray will lock horns against Czech World No. 39 Tomas Machac in the first round of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships. The match is scheduled for Tuesday, July 2nd, 2024. Here's our Andy Murray vs Tomas Machac prediction.
Andy Murray vs Tomas Machac Preview
Andy Murray remains doubtful of playing at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships after undergoing a back procedure shortly after retiring during his second-round match at Queen's. It was reported that he had withdrawn from the tournament, but his camp quickly dispelled the news.
Recently, an optimistic Murray stated that he would try to maximize the time at his disposal to give his body every chance to play one more Wimbledon. The former World No. 1 is expected to hang up his racket this summer, and this could very much be his last tournament (also due to play doubles with brother Jamie).
Tomas Machac, meanwhile, is set to play just his second Wimbledon main draw. Machac had to qualify for last year's event but was knocked out in the first round by another Brit, Cameron Norrie.
This time, he can exact revenge on the home nation as he takes on an ailing Murray, who is not fully fit for what is conceivably his last tournament. The 23-year-old Czech has been a standout performer on the ATP Tour this year, charging up the rankings and establishing himself as a potential Top 20 player. His best results this year include a quarterfinal run in Miami and a runner-up finish in Geneva.
Andy Murray vs Tomas Machac Head-To-Head
• Machac leads Murray 2-0 in their head-to-head.
• They last played at the 2024 Miami Open, where Murray suffered ankle ligament damage.
Andy Murray vs Tomas Machac Prediction
The odds suggest Murray's last Wimbledon will end with a whimper. The Scotsman has not had the ideal preparation for the event after sustaining an untimely back injury at Queen's. Machac should be winning this match even despite his overall lack of experience on grass. It's the only feasible result in this match, given Murray's physical struggles, and it wouldn't be a surprise if he pulled out at the 11th hour.
