Alejandro Tabilo and Zhizhen Zhang clash for a maiden semifinal spot at the 2024 Italian Open in Rome. The match is scheduled for Wednesday, May 15, 2024. Here's our Alejandro Tabilo vs Zhizhen Zhang prediction.
Alejandro Tabilo vs Zhizhen Zhang Preview
Alejandro Tabilo is enjoying a dream fortnight at the 2024 Italian Open. Somebody will have to pinch him so that he can actually believe that this fairytale run is happening in reality. Tabilo has deservedly reached his first Masters quarterfinal with a career-best win over World No. 1 and six-time champion Novak Djokovic and a headline-making success over Top 20 player Karen Khachanov. He has only dropped his serve three times during the fortnight and will look to cap off this remarkable streak by reaching his first semifinal at this level.
Zhizhen Zhang has been to a Masters quarterfinal on clay before when he stunned the tennis world at last year's Madrid Open. So this is nothing new to him, but it is still a heck of an effort by the talented Chinese man. His draw has probably not been the most bumpy, but beating Thiago Monteiro on clay and in straight sets is no mean feat.
Alejandro Tabilo vs Zhizhen Zhang Head-To-Head
• Zhang leads Tabilo 1-0 in their head-to-head, winning a 2021 Wimbledon qualifying match in two tie-break sets.
• Tabilo is 14-6 on clay this season, while Zhang is only 5-3 on the surface.
Alejandro Tabilo vs Zhizhen Zhang Prediction
Tabilo is assured a seeding spot for Roland Garros having broken into the Top 32 in the live rankings. Zhang could join him if he can eliminate him and keep this run going (a reminder that the Chinese star started the fortnight outside the Top 50). This will be a battle of wits, but I expect Tabilo to come out firing right from the off. He's been the story of the tournament so far and is riding on a seven-match win streak (14 wins all season on clay). As much as Zhang has a shot of winning this match, Tabilo is the heavy favorite. Give me the Chilean in thrilling a three-setter.
