Second seed Aryna Sabalenka will face Ukraine's Dayana Yastremska in an intriguing third-round clash at the 2024 Italian Open in Rome. The match is scheduled for Sunday, May 12, 2024. Here's our Aryna Sabalenka vs Dayana Yastremska prediction.
Aryna Sabalenka vs Dayana Yastremska Preview
Aryna Sabalenka had to win ugly in her second-round match, beating American qualifier Katie Volynets 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 to pick up her seventh win on clay this season. Sabalenka clarified in her post-match presser that she had been bedridden for four days. Additionally, the physical and emotional toll of playing non-stop tennis in Madrid, where she lost to Iga Swiatek in the final, overwhelmed her. It was understandable that she did not serve her prettiest performance of the season. But the most important thing is that she got the job done, taking a little over two hours to break down Volynets' spirit.
Dayana Yastreska, meanwhile, won a topsy-turvy match against Laura Siegemund. Like Sabalenka, Yastremska came back from a set down to beat the German veteran in three sets. The Ukrainian trailed by a break in the decider and took a calculated medical timeout in the third set before turning the match around. It was her second win on European clay this year, and she will attempt to reach the round of 16 of the Italian Open for the second time.
Aryna Sabalenka vs Dayana Yastremska Head-To-Head
• Yastremska leads Sabalenka 3-0 in their head-to-head.
• Their only previous meeting was in Strasbourg in 2019, where the Ukrainians won 6-4, 6-4.
• Sabalenka is 7-2 on clay in 2024 and is a former semifinalist in Rome.
• Yastremska is 2-2 on clay in 2024. Her best appearance in Rome was reaching the round of 16 in 2020.
Aryna Sabalenka vs Dayana Yastremska Prediction
I can't work my mind around the head-to-head in this one (Yastremska leads 3-0), but the duo haven't played since Adelaide 2020. And a lot has happened in the past four years. Sabalenka has become a multiple Grand Slam champion and a more accomplished player at the top level. Yastremska, meanwhile, faded after her early career potential and stooped to a three-digit ranking in that time. The Ukrainian has done commendably to resuscitate her career and is enjoying a resurgent season in 2024. Expect plenty of powerful hitting in this one, with winners and unforced errors in equal supply. I expect Sabalenka's consistency to shine and get her overdue win over Yastremska in their series.
