Top seed Novak Djokovic will face French lefty Corentin Moutet in the second round of the 2024 Italian Open in Rome. The match is scheduled for Friday, May 10, 2024. Here's our Novak Djokovic vs Corentin Moutet prediction.
Novak Djokovic vs Corentin Moutet Preview
Novak Djokovic will play for the first time in almost a month. The World No. 1 recently confirmed that the Madrid Open was not part of his schedule and, therefore, chose to skip it in the past fortnight. His visit to Madrid at that time was to collect a record-equalling fifth Laureus Sportsman of the Year award. Djokovic is now back in one of his favorite tournaments, the Italian Open, where he has reached the finals 12 times and won the title on six occasions. When he does well in Rome, he tends to do well at Roland Garros, too, so this is a massive couple of weeks for the Serb as he seeks to end his trophyless start to 2024.
Corentin Moutet had to win a first-round match to earn a date against the top-seeded Djokovic. He earned a spot in the main draw as a lucky loser but pulled off a shock win over Russia's Roman Safiullin. The mercurial Frenchman recovered from losing the first set to triumph 3-6, 7-6, 6-2. It was his 18th win on clay at all levels this year, and remarkably, he hasn't played a match outside clay this season.
Novak Djokovic vs Corentin Moutet Head-To-Head
Djokovic leads Moutet 1-0 in their head-to-head, winning a second-round match at the 2019 Paris Masters in straight sets.
Novak Djokovic vs Corentin Moutet Prediction
Djokovic has tinkered with his coaching team in the last few months, and this will now be a very important stretch for him. The number one ranking will be on the line after Rome, so leaving the Eternal City empty-handed is far away from his targets. Moutet is such an unpredictable player when on the court, but he's got an array of shots that work so well on clay, which is his strongest surface. While I can't see his power causing Djokovic any trouble here, even with the Serb's limited game time this season, his variation might get him a few games on the board.
