Portugal's No. 1 Nuno Borges will face 2015 French Open champion Stan Wawrinka in the first round of the 2024 Bucharest Open. The match will be played on Tuesday, April 16, 2024. Here's our Nuno Borges vs Stan Wawrinka prediction.
Borges impresses on home turf in Estoril
For Nuno Borges, the clay-court swing began in the first week of April when he played at his home tournament in Estoril. He scored a couple of excellent wins over Lucas Pouille and world no. 24 Lorenzo Musetti to reach the quarterfinal. There, he was beaten by a resurgent Cristian Garin in a match that was overshadowed by one controversial call by the chair umpire at a crucial juncture in the match. Borges felt he was docked a point unfairly, and rightly so. Will he bounce back from that disappointment with a strong showing in Bucharest?
Abject showing by Wawrinka in Monte Carlo
Stan Wawrinka is a former champion in Monte Carlo, but that was a decade ago when he won his one and only Masters title by defeating compatriot Roger Federer in the final. Wawrinka has been in the decline phase for a while, and his results this season prove that this is the case. He has played eight matches in 2024 and lost six of them, the last of which was in Monaco this past week, where he won just three games against Alex de Minaur in a dismal showing.

Nuno Borges vs Stan Wawrinka Prediction
Wawrinka was once a colossal presence on clay courts, but his groundstroke power and accuracy have waned. He is still capable of the occasional moment of brilliance and inspiration, but on the back of what is one of his poorest starts to a season, it's doubtful he'll get any joy here. Borges is steadily improving and impressed at his last tournament on clay in Estoril. The Portuguese No. 1 is a solid pick to win this match outright.
