World no. 51 Lorenzo Sonego will square off against Brazilian wild card Joao Fonseca in the first round of the 2024 Bucharest Open. The match will take place on Tuesday, April 16, 2024. Here's our Lorenzo Sonego vs Joao Fonseca prediction.
Lucky loser Sonego falls to Humbert in Monte Carlo
Lorenzo Sonego was given a second chance this past week while competing in Monte Carlo. He was knocked out in qualifying by Roberto Bautista Agut but was given a main draw spot following Carlos Alcaraz's withdrawal. The Italian grabbed that opportunity with both hands, benefitting from a first-round bye, and then pulled off a shock second-round win over Felix Auger-Aliasime. His campaign was ended in the round of 16 by Ugo Humbert in three sets.
Fonseca emerging as Brazil's new ATP star
Since Gustavo Kuerten's retirement almost two decades ago, Brazil has been yearning for a new star in men's tennis. And judging by his fantastic start to life as a professional, Joao Fonseca could be Brazil's breakout star destined for greatness. World no. 1 Novak Djokovic was recently amazed by his progress from what he has seen, and the rest of us are taking note. So far, he's featured sporadically on the main tour, with his best result coming at his home tournament in Rio in February, where he reached the last eight as a wild card.

Lorenzo Sonego vs Joao Fonseca Prediction
Sonego is vastly experienced, but Fonseca is a serious talent who is not afraid of showcasing his burgeoning repertoire. Pound for pound, the teenager is capable of matching or even overpowering the Italian, especially from the forehand side. The amount of pace he can generate from that wing is quite incredible. It will be fascinating to see how he fares here. He's played clay court tennis all year - 20 matches, to be precise. He's still a massive undergo to win this match, but worth a small investment on the games and sets spread.
