Corentin Moutet and Denis Shapovalov will meet in the first round of the 2024 Bucharest Open in a battle of the lefties. The match will be played on Tuesday, April 16, 2024. Here's our Corentin Moutet vs Denis Shapovalov prediction.
Moutet back in the Top 100
Last year, Corentin Moutet came close to exiting the Top 200, but he lifted his game when he needed to, to get his ranking moving in an upward trajectory. This season, he has regained his place in the Top 100, having won 12 of 20 matches across all levels. His best result was undoubtedly the semifinal run at the ATP 250 in Santiago at the start of March. What made that run particularly special was that Moutet battled from qualifying and earned a stunning win over Top 30 player and home crowd favorite Nicolas Jarry in the quarterfinal. Let's see if he'll find a similar level of form here in Bucharest.
Healthy Shapovalov seeking momentum
Denis Shapovalov made his long-awaited return to action at the start of January, playing his first tournament in seven months in Auckland. It took him a couple of tries to get his first win of the season, doing so in Montpellier when he defeated Hugo Gaston. He has since added five more wins to his tally, his most recent being the best win of his comeback, beating Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets at the Miami Masters. He played his first match on clay in Houston and lost in the first round to Marcos Giron.
Corentin Moutet vs Denis Shapovalov Head-To-Head
Moutet defeated Shapovalov in their only previous ATP meeting at the 2021 Estoril Open in three sets.
Corentin Moutet vs Denis Shapovalov Prediction
Moutet has played eight clay-court tournaments already this year and has a 12-8 record at all levels, including Challengers. Shapovalov's only match on clay was in the US, where he lost to Giron in Houston. It's a tricky opener in Bucharest for the Canadian who has struggled to get any sort of momentum. But a deep run this week would breathe life into his season. Moutet cannot be trusted to get a grip on this match as the favorite here. Shapovalov has been unfortunate in some of his matches this season, presumably due to a lack of confidence and game time. He's got great potential and a higher ceiling than the Frenchman for sure; it's whether he'll get his timing and consistency in his game.
