Last year's semifinalist, Dan Evans, will take on world no. 88 Brandon Nakashima in the first round of the 2024 Barcelona Open. The match will be played on Monday, April 15, 2024. Here's our Dan Evans vs Brandon Nakashima prediction.
Evans looks to snap three-match losing streak
For the third time this season, Dan Evans has lost three matches in a row. The British one-hander has endured a dismal year which is now threatening his place in the world's Top 50. Evans needs a result and a deep run from somewhere. A return to clay is probably his least likeliest place to arrest that downward spiral but he can find solace from the fact that he exceeded expectations during his last trip to Barcelona. He earned wins over Matteo Arnaldi, Karen Khachanov, and Francisco Cerundolo to reach a rare semifinal on the dirt where he lost to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz.
Can Nakashima replicate Houston run?
Brandon Nakashima was a quarterfinalist during his last tournament on clay in Houston, Texas. But the conditions are very different to those in Europe, so he might need a bit of time to settle in Barcelona. The San Diego native is trying to get his season and ranking moving in the right direction after a difficult 2023 campaign in which he fell as low as 151st in the rankings. Nakashima has done most of the good work on the Challenger tour in 2024, reaching two finals and winning in Tenerife.
Dan Evans vs Brandon Nakashima Head-To-Head
Evans and Nakashima have met twice on the ATP Tour. The head-to-head is tied at 1-1. This match in Barcelona will be their first official confrontation on clay.
Dan Evans vs Brandon Nakashima Prediction
If there is anything we have learnt over the last two seasons is not to underestimate Dan Evans' will to win. Even on his worst surface, he is capable of producing the goods. But Evans has had a nightmare of a year so far, winning just three matches. Confidence is at an all-time low. Back a resurgent Nakashima to win this one.
