World No. 119 Julia Riera of Argentina will face British World No. 270 Francesca Jones in the semifinal of the 2024 San Luis Open. The match will be played on Saturday, March 30, 2024. Here's our Julia Riera vs Francesca Jones prediction.
Julia Riera
Julia Riera is inching closer to a Top 100 breakthrough, but she'll most likely need to lift the title in San Luis Potosi to break that barrier. After losing four straight matches on hard courts, Riera was glad to switch surfaces. Clay is her forte and proved that with a trio of dominant wins this week. She faced the highest level of resistance in the quarterfinal against Suzan Lamens but still came away with a 6-4, 6-4 win in an hour and 28 minutes. She fashioned as many as 12 break points and converted three.
Francesca Jones
Francesca Jones is a former World No. 149 from Great Britain who has defied the odds to pursue a career in professional tennis. She was born with a rare genetic condition of fewer fingers and toes on her hands and feet, respectively. Injuries have severely impacted her progress in recent years, and she has been forced to retire from two tournaments already this year, most notably at the Australian Open qualifying (due to cramps) and the Hammamet ITF in Tunisia over a month ago (undisclosed). But she has returned to winning ways in San Luis Potosi, beating Yulia Starodubtseva, Anna Bondar, and Robin Montgomery - all of whom are ranked inside the world's Top 200.
Julia Riera vs Francesca Jones Head-To-Head
Riera and Jones have met once at the Guayaquil ITF final last year. The Argentine won in straight sets.
Julia Riera vs Francesca Jones Prediction
Riera has not dropped a set in reaching the semifinal of the San Luis Open. The 21-year-old struggled for consistency for over a month, but it's interesting how a change in surfaces has brought about positive results for her. Jones, meanwhile, hadn't played a match since the end of February but showed resilience and tenacity in winning two of her three matches in three sets. The Brit seems to play her best tennis on clay. She has won more matches on the dirt than any other surface. But siding with Riera is the obvious selection here, given how the Argentine has performed this week.
