Former World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki will play Anna Blinkova in the first round of the 2024 San Diego Open. The match will take place on Tuesday, February 27, 2024. Here's our Caroline Wozniacki vs Anna Blinkova prediction.
Caroline Wozniacki
Caroline Wozniacki has been given a wild card to compete at this year's San Diego Open. This is just her fourth match of 2024 after a modest Australian summer. Wozniacki was beaten in the opening round of the ASB Classic in Auckland at the start of the season by Elina Svitolina. Although she earned a retirement win in the first round of the Australian Open, she was upset by Russian qualifier Maria Timofeeva in the subsequent round. The former World No. 1 has played in an exhibition match, most recently in Dallas, against Eugenie Bouchard, but other than that, she hasn't played a competitive match in over a month heading to San Diego.
Anna Blinkova
Anna Blinkova is ranked 51st in the world rankings, which is down from her best ranking of 34 (which she attained in August 2023). She has a 3-5 record in 2024 and last competed in the first week of February at the Translyvania Open, where she lost in the second round to Nuria Parrizas Diaz. Her best achievement so far was reaching the third round of this year's Australian Open, where she scored one of the biggest upsets of the tournament when she took out World No. 4 Elena Rybakina in the second round by winning a dramatic third-set tiebreak that set a record as the longest in women's Grand Slam history.
Caroline Wozniacki vs Anna Blinkova Head-To-Head
Wozniacki and Blinkova have never crossed paths on tour. Therefore, this will be their first career meeting.
Caroline Wozniacki vs Anna Blinkova Prediction
It hasn't quite been the productive return to tennis that 33-year-old Woznaicki envisaged when she performed a shocking U-turn last summer by coming out of retirement. While she did exceed expectations in reaching the US Open second week, Wozniacki has not played a lot of tournaments since then as she tries to balance motherhood with the rigors of the tennis tour. Blinkova, by contrast, is only 25 and is only improving. The Russian is a decent ball striker and showcased her versatility in that mammoth win over Rybakina at the Australian Open. And as the underdog in this match, she is a decent value pick.
