Ashleigh Barty and Danielle Collins meet in the final of the 2022 tennis Australian Open.
Ashleigh Barty is coming off a straight sets win over Madison Keys that took 16 games to decide. In the victory, Barty won 86 percent of her first serve points and 67 percent of her second serve points. Barty won 78 percent of her total service points and converted on four of her six break points. Barty saved both of her break points and had 20 winners to go with 13 unforced errors. Barty has yet to drop a set this tournament. Barty looks to win her first Australian Open and third grand slam overall. Barty is 2-0 in previous grand slam final appearances. Barty is 14-6 in final appearances for her career overall. Barty has won 10 straight matches on hard court.
Danielle Collins is coming off a straight sets win over Iga Swiatek that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Collins won 78 percent of her first serve points and 39 percent of her second serve points. Collins won 64 percent of her total service points and converted on six of her 10 break points. Collins got 64 percent of her first serves in play and hit 27 winners to go with 13 unforced errors. Collins has won each of her last six sets. Collins looks to win her first grand slam title and the third title of her career. Collins is 2-0 in previous final appearances, both coming last year. Collins has won eight of her last nine matches on hard court.
Barty has won three of the four meetings against Collins, but that lone loss came in the most recent meeting last year in Adelaide. Two of Barty’s wins came on clay court, and two of the four matches needed three sets to be decided.
Collins has really come on over the last year and some change, and she has some feistiness to her that gives her a punchers chance. However, Collins also lacks the big match experience that concerns me here. Barty has also been dominant this tournament, not dropping a set, and she’ll obviously be the crowd favorite, which never hurts. Barty should win this match.
I’ll take Barty in straight sets to shave down the big juice.
