Matteo Berrettini and Novak Djokovic meet Sunday in the final of the 2021 tennis Wimbledon.
Matteo Berrettini is coming off a four sets win over Hubert Hurkacz that took 38 games to decide. In the victory, Berrettini won 86 percent of his first serve points and 61 percent of his second serve points. Berrettini won 77 percent of his total service points and converted on six of his 10 break points. Berrettini saved both of his break points and hit 22 aces in the victory. Berrettini has been dominant on grass court this season and has to be feeling himself a bit. Berrettini looks to win his first career grand slam title and the sixth title of his career overall. A win here gives Berrettini his third title of the year. Berrettini is 5-2 in career final appearances and 2-0 in final appearances on grass court. Berrettini has won 11 straight matches on grass court.
Novak Djokovic is coming off a straight sets win over Denis Shapovalov that took 37 games to decide. In the victory, Djokovic won 81 percent of his first serve points and 57 percent of his second serve points. Djokovic won 71 percent of his total service points and converted on three of his 10 break points. Djokovic saved 10 of his 11 break points and hit 32 winners in the victory. While it hasn’t always been pretty, Djokovic has won his last 18 sets. Djokovic looks to win his 20th grand slam title and his sixth Wimbledon title. Djokovic has won seven of his last eight grand slam final appearances and is 5-1 in Wimbledon final appearances. Djokovic has won 10 of his last 11 matches on grass court.
Djokovic has won both meetings against Berrettini and is 5-1 in completed sets. The meetings took place this year in the French Open and 2019 London. Obviously, this is the first meeting on grass.
Djokovic hasn’t played his best tennis this tournament, but he’s pushing through it and finding ways to get the job done. Berrettini has been on a monster on grass this season and has the power game to give Djokovic some issues. I’d still lean Djokovic, but this has the ability to be closer than some think.
I’d take Djokovic in 4 sets.
