Ashleigh Barty and Karolina Pliskova meet Saturday in the final of the 2021 tennis Wimbledon.
Ashleigh Barty is coming off a straight sets win over Angelique Kerber that took 22 games to decide. In the victory, Barty won 88 percent of her first serve points and 45 percent of her second serve points. Barty won 69 percent of her total service points and converted on two of her five break points. Barty saved five of her six break points and hit eight aces. Barty has won her last 11 sets and eight of her last 10 wins have come in straight sets. Barty looks to win her second career grand slam title and first since the 2019 French Open. Barty is 1-0 in career grand slam final appearances. Barty has won 10 of her last 11 matches on grass court.
Karolina Pliskova is coming off a three sets win over Aryna Sabalenka that took 32 games to decide. In the victory, Pliskova won 78 percent of her first serve points and 69 percent of her second serve points. Pliskova won 75 percent of her total service points and converted on two of her 10 break points. Pliskova bounced back nicely after dropping the first set and hit 14 aces in the victory. Pliskova has won six of her last eight matches that have gone the distance. Pliskova looks to win her first career grand slam title. Pliskova is 0-1 in career grand slam finals, and that lone loss came in the 2016 US Open. Pliskova has won six straight matches on grass court.
These two have played seven times and Barty has won the last three meetings and five overall. Pliskova’s last win over Barty came in the 2018 US Open. Four of the meetings went the distance.
Pliskova and plus money is worth a look, but I have to lean Barty in this matchup. Barty has the pace that can frustrate Pliskova and force her to play longer rallies than she’d like. And while past meetings have been competitive, Barty has been on the right side more times than not. Barty will force Pliskova to do a lot of hitting and running to win this match.
Barty wins her second grand slam.
