Hubert Hurkacz and Matteo Berrettini meet Friday in the semifinals of the 2021 tennis Wimbledon.
Hubert Hurkacz is coming off a straight sets win over Roger Federer that took 28 games to decide. In the victory, Hurkacz won 79 percent of his first serve points and 56 percent of his second serve points. Hurkacz won 69 percent of his total service points and converted on five of his 15 break points. Hurkacz saved three of his four break points and hit 36 winners in the shocking victory. Hurkacz now has nine career wins over top-10 players and four of those wins have come this year. Hurkacz looks to make his first career grand slam final and the fourth final appearance of his career overall. Hurkacz has won five of his last six matches on grass court.
Matteo Berrettini is coming off a four sets win over Felix Auger-Aliassime that took 42 games to decide. In the victory, Berrettini won 76 percent of his first serve points and 50 percent of his second serve points. Berrettini won 67 percent of his total service points and converted on six of his 14 break points. Berrettini saved nine of his 12 break points and hit 33 winners in the victory. Berrettini has now won 15 of his last 17 completed matches. Berrettini looks to make his first career grand slam final and the eighth final appearance of his career overall. Berrettini is 0-1 in previous grand slam semifinal matches. Berrettini has won 10 straight matches on grass court.
These two have split the previous two matches, as Berrettini won 2018 Australian Open and Hurkacz won 2019 Miami. Both matches were decided in straight sets.
Hurkacz can’t be overlooked after he just dominated Federer, but I do question how he’ll respond to such a victory. Possible letdown spot? Berrettini has also been dominant on grass court this season, winning 10 straight matches and hitting his spots with consistency. I don’t put anything past Hurkacz, but Berrettini is in better form and playing the sharper tennis overall.
I like Berrettini to make his first grand slam final.
