Karolina Pliskova and Aryna Sabalenka meet Thursday in the semifinals of the 2021 tennis Wimbledon.
Karolina Pliskova is coming off a straight sets win over Viktorija Golubic that took 16 games to decide. In the victory, Pliskova won 83 percent of her first serve points and 56 percent of her second serve points. Pliskova won 75 percent of her total service points and converted on four of her 10 break points. Pliskova saved all three of her break points and has yet to drop a set this tournament. Pliskova has been lights out this tournament to say the least. Pliskova looks to make her second career grand slam final appearance and first since the 2016 US Open. Pliskova is 1-2 in career grand slam semifinal matches. Pliskova has won five straight matches on grass court.
Aryna Sabalenka is coming off a straight sets win over Ons Jabeur that took 19 games to decide. In the victory, Sabalenka won 83 percent of her first serve points and 41 percent of her second serve points. Sabalenka won 66 percent of her total service points and converted on three of her 10 break points. Sabalenka saved six of her seven break points and hit 27 winners. Sabalenka has won 14 of her last 17 matches in straight sets. Sabalenka looks to make her first career grand slam final appearance and 16th final appearance overall. Sabalenka has won seven of her last eight matches on grass court.
Sabalenka has won both meetings against Pliskova. The matches took place in 2018 Cincinnati and 2018 Eastbourne. Both matches were decided in three sets.
This should be a hell of a match, as both of these players are playing some of their best tennis in recent memory. Sabalenka is playing disciplined tennis and is finally enjoying her breakthrough on the big stage. With that said, Pliskova has yet to drop a set this tournament and her ability to pile up the aces is key in this match. Free points are so crucial in matches like this that are expected to be tight.
Possible three setter here, but I give Pliskova the edge.
