Ons Jabeur and Garbine Muguruza meet Friday in the third round of the 2021 tennis Wimbledon.
Ons Jabeur is coming off a straight sets win over Venus Williams that took 18 games to decide. In the victory, Jabeur won 72 percent of her first serve points and 58 percent of her second serve points. Jabeur won 67 percent of her total service points and converted on five of her 12 break points. Jabeur saved five of her six break points and won each of the last nine games. Each of Jabeur’s last six wins have been decided in straight sets. Jabeur looks to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the fourth time in her last six tries. Jabeur has won eight of her last nine matches on grass court.
Garbine Muguruza is coming off a straight sets win over Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Muguruza won 81 percent of her first serve points and 71 percent of her second serve points. Muguruza won 77 percent of her total service points and converted on four of her 12 break points. Muguruza saved three of her four break points and hit 22 winners. Muguruza has lost a combined six games in her first four sets this tournament, looking like an early title contender. Muguruza looks to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the fifth time in her last 10 tries. Muguruza has won four of her last five matches on grass court.
Muguruza beat Jabeur in the only meeting, which was in 2020 Hobart. The match was decided in three sets and 31 games.
You can make a case for either of these players, as they both look sharp early and have had a lot of recent success in grand slam play. However, Muguruza is one of the best players in the world when she’s on top of her game and she has more upside in this spot. I simply trust her more.
Give me Muguruza to make the fourth round of Wimbledon for the first time since 2017 when she won the tournament.
