Denis Shapovalov and Andy Murray meet Friday in the third round of the 2021 tennis Wimbledon.
Denis Shapovalov is coming off a walkover victory over Pablo Andujar-Alba in the second round. Shapovalov got much needed rest after playing five sets and over three and a half hours in the first round. Shapovalov hit 58 winners in his opening match, but he’ll need to clean up the 57 unforced errors if he’s going to make a deep tournament run. Shapovalov hopes to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the third time in his career. Shapovalov has never made the fourth round in Wimbledon. Shapovalov has won five of his last six matches on grass court.
Andy Murray is coming off a five sets win over Oscar Otte that took 47 games to decide. In the victory, Murray won 74 percent of his first serve points and 40 percent of his second serve points. Murray won 62 percent of his total service points and converted on seven of his 12 break points. Murray made a nice comeback after dropping two of the first three sets and he hit 55 winners in the victory. Murray hasn’t won three straight matches on the ATP Tour since Antwerp of 2019. Murray looks to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the first time since 2017 Wimbledon. Murray has won three of his last four matches on grass court.
There’s no match history between these two players.
Shapovalov should win this match, especially with the rest advantage, but he’s also a young player who has struggled at times with consistency. While Murray is still working his way back and played a marathon match, he’s also a grinder and experienced player who will take advantage of mistakes. Murray isn’t going to beat himself and he’ll make Shapovalov work.
The value is with Murray and the plus money.
