Tennys Sandgren and Alexander Zverev meet Thursday in the second round of the 2021 tennis Wimbledon.
Tennys Sandgren is coming off a four sets win over Norbert Gombos that took 37 games to decide. In the victory, Sandgren won 83 percent of his first serve points and 72 percent of his second serve points. Sandgren won 78 percent of his total service points and converted on five of his 13 break points. Sandgren comfortably won his opening match where he hit 34 winners and 19 unforced errors. However, Sandgren has to get more than 56 percent of his first serves in play. Sandgren has four career wins over top-10 players. Sandgren looks to make the third round of a grand slam for the fifth time in his career. Sandgren has split his last four matches on grass court.
Alexander Zverev is coming off a straight sets win over Tallon Griekspoor that took 26 games to decide. In the victory, Zverev won 77 percent of his first serve points and 48 percent of his second serve points. Zverev won 68 percent of his total service points and converted on seven of his 16 break points. Zverev saved two of his four break points and hit 20 winners in a match that took about an hour and a half to complete. Solid performance from Zverev, and he now looks to make the third round of Wimbledon for the fourth time in his career. Zverev has lost before the third round of a grand slam just once since 2018. Zverev has won two of his last three matches on grass court.
Zverev won the only match against Sandgren, which was 2017 Washington. The match was decided in straight sets and 24 games.
Zverev is a legit contender in this tournament if he plays the clean tennis that he played in his opening match. With that said, Sandgren is a dangerous matchup given his ability to spray winners and his lunchpail style. Sandgren competes hard and fights for every point. This won’t be an easy second round match.
I still like Zverev in four sets.
