Novak Djokovic and Kevin Anderson meet Wednesday in the second round of the 2021 tennis Wimbledon.
Novak Djokovic is coming off a four sets win over Jack Draper that took 33 games to decide. In the victory, Djokovic won 87 percent of his first serve points and 67 percent of his second serve points. Djokovic won 83 percent of his total service points and converted on six of his 15 break points. Djokovic bounced back nicely after dropping the first set and hit 47 winners overall in the victory. Djokovic hasn’t lost in the second round of a grand slam since the 2017 Australian Open. Djokovic hasn’t lost in the second round of Wimbledon since 2008. Djokovic has won nine of his last 10 matches on grass court.
Kevin Anderson is coming off a four sets win over Marcelo Tomas Barrios Vera that took 46 games to decide. In the victory, Anderson won 87 percent of his first serve points and 52 percent of his second serve points. Anderson won 76 percent of his total service points and converted on two of his eight break points. Anderson hit 41 aces and hit 67 winners in the victory, and he saved both of his break points. If Anderson can keep that up, he gives himself a chance at an upset in this match. Anderson hopes to make the third round of a grand slam for the third time since 2019. Anderson has split his last six matches on grass court.
Djokovic has won 10 of the 12 meetings against Anderson and each of the last four meetings. Anderson hasn’t beaten Djokovic since the 2018 Laver Cup. Djokovic has won all three Wimbledon meetings against Anderson and is 9-2 in those sets.
Djokovic showed he can still find that next level when needed, as he was dominant after dropping that first set. Anderson has the tools to be a scary second round opponent and can make this match interesting if he keeps pounding aces. However, Djokovic has faced Anderson enough and has cruised in those matches, so he knows what to expect.
I’ll take Djokovic in straight sets.
