Yoshihito Nishioka and John Isner meet Wednesday in the first round of the 2021 tennis Wimbledon.
Yoshihito Nishioka has lost three of his last four matches overall and is coming off an opening loss at Eastbourne. It’s been a struggle for Nishioka this year to say the least and he’s had major issues with his serve. In fact, Nishioka won just 45 percent of his service points in his last match. The lack of recent reps or success on grass court probably doesn’t help matters. Nishioka looks to make the second round of a grand slam for the fifth time in his last seven tries. Nishioka has lost his last four matches on grass court.
John Isner will play his first match since the third round of the French Open and has won seven of his last 10 matches overall. For Isner, the formula is the same for every tournament, and that’s hitting aces and holding serve. Isner isn’t the best returner in the world, but he puts so much pressure on his opponent with his ridiculous service game. However, Isner needs to avoid marathon matches to save energy for the later rounds. Isner Isner looks to make the second round of a grand slam for the ninth time in his last 11 tries. Isner hasn’t lost in the first round of Wimbledon since 2012. Isner has won five of his last six matches on grass court.
Isner beat Nishioka in the only match, which came in 2017 Memphis. The match was decided in three sets and 29 games.
Nishioka would have a shot here if he was playing well, but he’s had major issues all year long and his lack of reps on grass court doesn’t help. Isner is rested and his formula to win doesn’t change depending on the surface. Power serve and win tiebreaks.
This match may go four sets or so, but the American should prevail.
