Francesca Jones and Coco Gauff meet Tuesday in the first round of the 2021 tennis Wimbledon.

Francesca Jones enters this tournament on a six-match losing streak, as she hasn’t won a match since April in a ITF tournament. It’s been a rough year for Jones to say the least, and she has just one previous grand slam match under her belt, which came this year in the Australian Open. The good news for Jones is that she’ll have the crowd behind her, as the 20-year-old is from Leeds. Maybe some strong support from the fans could lead the struggling and inexperienced Jones to an improbable upset. Jones has lost eight straight matches on grass court.

Coco Gauff lost her second match in Eastbourne, but she was able to get a valuable six sets under her belt for this grass tournament. Gauff is in terrific form overall, winning 10 of her last 12 matches, which includes winning the Emilia-Romagna Open title. Of course, Gauff made her breakthrough into the tennis world in the 2019 Wimbledon when she made the fourth round. At now 17 years old and with much more experience under her belt, Gauff enters this tournament as a dark horse contender to win the title. Gauff has won six of her last eight matches on grass court.

Gauff won the only meeting against Jones, which was this year in Adelaide. The match was won in straight sets and 17 games.

Gauff is playing some of her most consistent tennis of her young career and going up against Jones who can’t get out of her own way. While there will be some in the crowd cheering on for the home town Jones, it won’t be enough. Gauff is playing too well right now and has to be looking at a deep run.
