Tallon Griekspoor and Alexander Zverev meet Tuesday in the first round of the 2021 tennis Wimbledon.
Tallon Griekspoor will make his second career appearance in a grand slam after winning three matches to qualify. Griekspoor is a 24-year-old from Netherlands who has very little experience on the ATP Tour, so these matches are certainly good for his growth. Griekspoor has spent much of this year in challenger play and recently won a title in Bratislava on clay. Unfortunately, outside of his three qualifying matches, Griekspoor doesn’t have a lot of reps on grass court. Griekspoor has won his last three matches on grass court.
Alexander Zverev lost his second match in Halle, but he got six sets on grass court to get in the swing of things. Zverev is having his best season so far in grand slam play, as he made the quarterfinals of the Australian Open and the semifinals of the French Open. The bad news is that Zverev has a 62 percent winning percentage at the Wimbledon, which is his lowest of all grand slams. Still, Zverev is considered a top-10 candidate to win this years title. Zverev has lost in the first round of a grand slam just once since 2018, and that loss came in the 2019 Wimbledon. Zverev has split his last six matches on grass court.
There’s no match history between these two players.
Zverev isn’t at his best on grass court and you have to be open to that when betting him in this tournament. With that said, Griekspoor has very little experience under his belt, doesn’t play on big stages often and isn’t used to going up against this sort of talent. Expect a shellshocked Griekspoor who could struggle with nerves.
