Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas meet Friday in the semifinal of the 2021 tennis French Open.
Alexander Zverev is coming off a straight sets win over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina that took 24 games to decide. In the victory, Zverev won 76 percent of his first serve points and 57 percent of his second serve points. Zverev won 68 percent of his total service points and converted on nine of his 15 break points. Zverev saved three of his six break points and had just 16 unforced errors. Zverev has won each of his last 15 sets. Zverev looks to make his second career grand slam final appearance. Zverev is 1-1 in previous grand slam semifinal matches. Zverev has won seven of his last eight matches on clay court.
Stefanos Tsitsipas is coming off a straight sets win over Daniil Medvedev that took 34 games to decide. In the victory, Tsitsipas won 73 percent of his first serve points and 75 percent of his second serve points. Tsitsipas won 74 percent of his total service points and converted on four of his seven break points. Tsitsipas got 65 percent of his first serves in play and saved six of his eight break points. Tsitsipas has won each of his last nine sets and is going to be a force if he keeps getting his first serve in play. Tsitsipas looks to make his first career grand slam final appearance. Tsitsipas is 0-3 in previous grand slam semifinal matches. Tsitsipas has won nine straight matches on clay court.
Tsitsipas has won five of the seven matches against Zverev, including the only match on clay back in 2019 Madrid. However, Zverev won the most recent match this year in Acapulco. Five of the seven meetings have been decided in straight sets, but this will be the first meeting in a grand slam.
This should be a hell of a semifinal between two of the young stars in the sport. With that said, I have to give the edge to Tsitsipas. Not only has he owned Zverev in previous matchups but he’s the more trustworthy player from a mental standpoint. Zverev can still fall apart in key situations at times and it’s prevented him from taking that next step. It should also be worth mentioning Zverev has had a fairly easy road to get to this point.
I like Tsitsipas to make his first grand slam final.
