Alexander Zverev and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina meet in the quarterfinals of the 2021 tennis French Open.
Alexander Zverev is coming off a straight sets win over Kei Nishikori that took 24 games to decide. In the victory, Zverev won 68 percent of his first serve points and 68 percent of his second serve points. Zverev won 68 percent of his total service points and converted on eight of his 11 break points. Zverev got 71 percent of his first serves in play and saved two of his four break points. Zverev has now won 12 straight sets and has lost a combined two games in his last two sets. Zverev looks to make his third career grand slam semifinal appearance. Zverev is 2-3 in grand slam quarterfinal matches. Zverev has won six of his last seven matches on clay court.
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is coming off a four sets win over Federico Delbonis that took 40 games to decide. In the victory, Davidovich won 70 percent of his first serve points and 49 percent of his second serve points. Davidovich won 63 percent of his total service points and converted on seven of his 16 break points. Davidovich is having his breakthrough moment at 22 years old, but he’s played 17 sets to get to this point. Fatigue could be an issue for Davidovich, somebody who doesn’t have a lot of success in grand slam play. Davidovich looks to make his first career grand slam semifinal appearance. Davidovich has one career win over a top-10 player. Davidovich has won six of his last seven matches on clay court.
These two have played twice and Zverev won both matches in straight sets. The matches took place in 2020 Cologne and the 2020 US Open. Obviously this will be the first match on clay.
This is new territory for Davidovich, and he’s played a lot of tennis to get to this point. We could see Davidovich struggle physically in the later sets of this match. Either way, this is a match Zverev should make quick work in if we’re being honest.
