Denis Shapovalov meets Grigor Dimitrov in the first-round of the 2020 Rotterdam Open.
Denis Shapovalov has not had the best start to 2020. In Australia he lost in the first-round in a match which most people saw him winning. Following onto that, a few weeks later, Shapovalov lost in the first-round of the Montpellier Open against fellow Canadian Vasek Pospisil. Shapovalov has not been able to carry his momentum which saw him end 2019 with his first Masters 1000 Final. Shapovalov is still an incredible player. The Canadian is quick, agile and flamboyant in his style of play. He will need to have all his weapons firing if he wants to stand a chance in Rotterdam.
Grigor Dimitrov also had a bad start to 2020, Dimitrov lost in the second round of the Australian Open and then in the second round a couple of weeks later in a match which should have been an easy win for the Bulgarian. Dimitrov is a player who could have already won multiple Grand Slams if it wasn't for his inconsistent style of play. He can be one of the top guys, but can also lose concentration and lose to very low ranked players. Dimitrov needs to find solutions and fix his game quickly if he wants to have a successful 2020.
These two players have met once before, back in 2016, with Dimitrov winning in straight sets. Back then, Dimitrov was a much better player and Shapovalov was just starting out. Since then, you can say the tables have turned, Dimitrov's career peaked in 2017 with the ATP Finals win, but since then its been a downfall. Shapovalov, however, has continued to grow as a player and go high in the rankings. This match goes the way of Shapovalov, but not without a fight from Grigor.
Shapovalov in 3 sets.
