The Line: -- Over/Under:
Elise Mertens and Simona Halep meet in the fourth round of the 2019 tennis Australian Open.
Elise Mertens is coming off a three sets win over Catherine Cartan Bellis that took 26 games to decide. In the victory, Mertens won 79 percent of her first serve points and 62 percent of her second serve points. Mertens won 73 percent of her total service points and converted on seven of her 15 break points. Mertens dominated the third set 6-0 after losing a heartbreaking tiebreaker, and she hit 12 aces and 38 winners overall. While Mertens isn’t a consistent threat in grand slams, she’s very dangerous if those aces keep reaching double digits. Mertens looks to make a grand slam quarterfinal for the third time in her career. Mertens is 2-3 in career fourth round matches in grand slams. Mertens has won five of her last six matches on hard court.
Simona Halep is coming off a straight sets win over Yulia Putintseva that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Halep won 77 percent of her first serve points and 38 percent of her second serve points. Halep won 63 percent of her total service points and converted on five of her nine break points. Halep got 65 percent of her first serves in play and hit 26 winners to just 15 unforced errors. Halep has yet to drop a set this tournament and seems to be getting more and more comfortable with each set. Halep hopes to make the quarterfinals of the Australian Open for the fourth time in her career. Halep is 8-1 in her last nine fourth round matches in grand slams. Halep has won four of her last five matches on hard court.
These two have played three times and Halep has won two of those matches in straight sets. However, Mertens won the most recent match last year in Doha, a match decided in three sets.
Mertens can win this match if she keeps getting so many free points with her serve, but Halep is the much safer bet and somebody who has to be a strong favorite to win this tournament. Halep has cleaned up the unforced errors and is hitting her spots with more consistency. Halep has the edge in experience and has the movement to counter Mertens power shots.
Halep makes the quarters in Australia for the fourth time.
