World number 12, Fabio Fognini, meets Tennys Sandgren in the fourth-round of the 2020 Australian Open on Sunday January 26 2020.

Fabio Fognini has had to work extremely hard to book his place in the fourth-round of the 2020 Australian Open. The Italian played two 5-set matches before being able to cruise past Guido Pella in straight sets in the third-round. Fognini is an incredible talent, he is able to move opponents around the court incredibly and has an amazing repertoire of shots which keep opponents on edge. Fognini had an incredible 2019, he won his first Masters 1000 title in Monte-Carlo beating Rafael Nadal along the way. Will Fabio be able to reach the quarterfinals of the 2020 Australian Open?

Tennys Sandgren is a very solid player, he is strong on serve and has a powerful forehand. Sandgren has had quite an easy draw to the fourth-round but he also beat US Open semi-finalist, Matteo Berrettini in the second-round. Sandgren won his first title in 2019 and showed us that he can provide challenged to the best players on the tour. How will he fair against the more experienced Fognini?

The H2H between these two players is in favour of Fognini. They have met 3 times and Fognini won 2 of those matches. However, the last match they played was about 6 months ago at Wimbedon, where Sandgren beat Fognini in 3 easy sets. I think this match will be more of a challenge for Sandgren to win, but not impossible. Fognini is an unpredictable player, he can beat the best in the world, but he can also lose to the worst players. If Fognini comes out playing at the same level which won him Monte-Carlo last year, then Fognini wins easy. But if we look at Fognini’s prior matches in this tournament, he has peaks and dips in performance. This match will be a long and gruelling challenge for both players, but Fognini will come out on top.

Fognini in 5 sets.
