2014 Australian Open Champion, Stan Wawrinka, will meet Italian, Andreas Seppi, in the second round of the 2020 Australian Open on Thursday 23 January 2020.
Stan Wawrinka beat Damir Dzumhur in 4 sets in the first round in a match where the Wawrinka serve was not broken once. Wawrinka was getting a feel for the courts in Melbourne in the first match and I am adamant that his level of play will increase throughout the tournament. Wawrinka, a former 3x Grand Slam Champion, will want to show that he is still able to compete on the biggest stages and the Swiss will come out focused on what’s ahead.
Andreas Seppi, the Italian veteran, also cruised through his first-round match against youngling Miomir Kecmanovic beating him in straight sets. Seppi has never really gone too far in Grand Slams and has only ever strongly competed in challenger tournaments and ATP250 tournaments. Seppi is getting older and this can be seen in his game style, he is more prone to making mistakes and this can cost him matches which he should be challenging in.
These two players have an extensive history of playing each other. They have met 12 times before and Stan the Man leads the H2H 9-3. The last time they met was here at the Australian Open in 2017 where Wawrinka won in straight sets. This match will be very interesting as both players are somewhat low on confidence right now and Wawrinka’s level has dipped since they last met. It will be interesting to see if Wawrinka can extend the H2H lead. Wawrinka in 4 sets.
Stan Wawrinka will win in 4 sets.
