World number 1, Rafael Nadal, meets Argentinian, Federico Delbonis, in the second round of the 2020 Australian Open on Thursday 23 January 2020.

Rafael Nadal showed great spirit and determination in his first-round match against Hugo Dellien. The Spaniard won in straight sets and even won the last set 6-0. Nadal showed us that he means business and wants to challenge to win the title. Nadal has had an amazing 2019 season and has carried that momentum over into the new year. It will be interesting to see if Nadal can win the AO this year and level Roger Federer’s record.

Federico Delbonis also won his match quite easily against Joao Sousa in the first round. The Argentinian won in straight sets and will face his toughest challenge yet, Rafael Nadal. Delbonis is a good player from the baseline but is not the most comfortable on hard courts. Delbonis is more of a clay court player and is not used to competiting much on the big stage. The Argentinian will have his hands full in this second round matchup.

This will be the third meeting between these two players. Nadal has a solid 3-0 lead and has never lost a set to Delbonis. Nadal’s victories against Delbonis were very easy. This match will be more of the same. Nadal will come out and move Delbonis around the court and ensure this match is done and dusted as quickly as possible. Nadal does not want to hang around too long on court in order to preserve energy.

Nadal in straight sets.
