The Line: -- Over/Under:
Naomi Osaka and Saisai Zheng meet in the second round of the 2019 tennis Australian Open.
Naomi Osaka is coming off a straight sets win over Marie Bouzkova that took 18 games to decide. In the victory, Osaka won 74 percent of her first serve points and 53 percent of her second serve points. Osaka won 68 percent of her total service points and converted on four of her nine break points. Osaka got 70 percent of her first serves in play and saved five of her six break points. Osaka got a lot of reps in Brisbane, and while she can clean up the unforced errors, she has to like where she’s at and the fact she’s had many chances to knockoff any potential rust from the layoff. Osaka has been bounced before the third round of a grand slam once since 2018. Osaka has won 10 of her last 11 matches on hard court.
Saisai Zheng is coming off a straight sets win over Anna Kalinskaya that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Zheng won 77 percent of her first serve points and 55 percent of her second serve points. Zheng won 72 percent of her total service points and converted on four of her 12 break points. Zheng got 76 percent of her first serves in play and hit 27 winners to just 14 unforced errors. Zheng has five carer wins over top-10 players and hopes to win back-to-back matches for the first time since Beijing. Zheng looks to make the third round of a grand slam for the first time in her career. Zheng has lost four of her last six matches on hard court.
These two have split the two meetings, as Osaka won 2016 Madrid in straight sets and Zheng won 2015 Gifu in three sets. This will be the second meeting on hard court.
Zheng is a dangerous player, as she has some success top names in the sport and she doesn’t pile up the unforced errors. Zheng plays a very clean game and is going to force her opponent to beat her and make shots. With that said, Osaka can hit through Zheng and take the racket out of her hands. When these two are playing well, it’s Osaka who can do more to separate herself on the tennis court.
Osaka should win this match in straight sets.
