Grigor Dimitrov will begin his 2020 season against Juan Ignacio Londero in the first round of the 2020 Australian Open on Monday 20th January 2020.

Dimitrov had a redemption year last year, after struggling with getting his game up to speed. The Bulgarian showed us once again why he is one of the best players in the world and why his rankings do not do Dimitrov justice. Dimitrov was able to reach the US Open Semi-final last year and played amazingly to arrive there, beating Roger Federer for the first time. Dimitrov played extremely well a few weeks ago at the ATP Cup and I see the Bulgarian bringing this form moving to the Australian Open.

Juan Ignacio Londero has a good 2019 season, winning his first title in Cordoba. Londero is an average player who on his day can put on a show. However, his game is not good enough to challenge big players on the big stage. Londero’s biggest achievement of 2019, other than his title, was his ability to win a set over Andy Murray. Other than that, Londero is not a player to write home about.

This will be the first meeting between these two players, and I only see this match going one way. Dimitrov will come out and destroy Londero. Dimitrov’s ability to play fast points, move opponents around the court and experience will prove too much for Londero who has never really challenged in big occasions. Dimitrov wins this match with easy.
