Round 10 of the Premier League will conclude with a derby match between Manchester United and Manchester City on Sunday, October 29, 2023, at Old Trafford. The Red Devils, who arguably play their best football of the season - a three-game winning streak, are six points behind the Citizens. United are 8th in the table with 15 points, while City are 3rd in PL with 21 points. Here, you can read our Manchester United vs Manchester City betting preview and prediction.
Manchester United (Form and News)
The Premier League (PL) weekend is rounded off by one of its most iconic fixtures, as Old Trafford plays host to the 191st edition of the Manchester derby. As the balance of power within the city has shifted in recent times, this is a fixture that Manchester United have grown to loathe, losing four of the last five meetings (W1), including the FA Cup final in June, as Manchester City went on to match United’s previously exclusive feat of winning a PL, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League (UCL) treble.
While revenge may be on the minds of Erik ten Hag’s players, they also need to concentrate on reviving their poor start to the season, as United languish in eighth ahead of this round. An emotionally charged evening in the UCL in midweek certainly stoked the fire, as Harry Maguire headed United ahead before under-fire goalkeeper André Onana saved a 97th-minute penalty to seal the victory. That win was their sixth this campaign by a one-goal margin, as was their 2-1 success in last season’s corresponding fixture on this ground, albeit the fixture was best remembered for the controversy surrounding Bruno Fernandes’ equalizer.
Hot stat: None of Manchester United’s last 21 matches have ended in a draw.
Player to watch: Manchester-born and bred Marcus Rashford has had a direct hand in a goal in each of United’s last three Premier League H2H victories, including the winner in January’s 2-1 success.
The hosts will be without Amad Diallo (knee), Tyrell Malacia (muscle), Lisandro Martinez (foot), Jadon Sancho (suspension), and Luke Shaw (muscle). Casemiro (ankle) and Aaron Wan-Bissaka (thigh) are questionable to feature on Sunday.
Manchester City (Form and News)
Manchester City will be looking to avoid losing successive trips to Old Trafford, a fate they’ve not suffered since February 2011. At that stage, City were yet to win their first Premier League title, while they’ve now claimed the crown seven times, sitting second only to United in that regard (13). Pep Guardiola’s men are now chasing a feat that the Red Devils never managed, however, as they could win a fourth successive PL title this year, a cause that would be greatly helped with victory over their arch-rivals.
After a wobble before the international break, Pep Guardiola’s men are looking more like themselves again with a pair of back-to-back wins. A 3-1 UCL victory over Young Boys in midweek was far from straightforward, but winning away is certainly a good sign for City given that they’d lost three of their prior four matches on the road, including both of their last two PL trips. Take a look at what I predicted for that Champions League match in Bern.
Player to watch: City’s hitman Erling Haaland netted a brace in midweek, and while he blanked on his only previous trip to Old Trafford, he directly contributed to five goals in a 6-3 H2H win at the Etihad Stadium last term (G3, A2)!
Pep Guardiola cannot count on suspended Manuel Akanji and injured Kevin De Bruyne (thigh).
Manchester United vs Manchester City H2H Record
Over the last ten H2H duels, Manchester City won five, Manchester United were better in four, while one game ended as a draw. Interestingly, that draw (0-0 in December 2020) was the only one in the previous 16 H2H meetings.
Manchester United vs Manchester City Odds
Manchester United are underdogs at +450; a draw is at +320, while Manchester City to win can be backed at -137. For the goals, you can go between Over 2.5 at -125 and Under 2.5 at +120. When it comes to both teams to score; BTTS YES is -125 and BTTS NO is +116. Take a look at more Premier League odds here!
Manchester United vs Manchester City Betting Pick
The last four H2H encounters produced even 20 goals, with both teams scoring in each game in the process. Manchester City conceded at least a goal in each of the previous six matches in all competitions and in 11 of the last 12. Their defense, although the best in the Premier League with seven goals conceded in nine games, is not convincing lately.
This is an opportunity for Manchester United to find the back of the net, as they managed to do in nine of the last ten matches. Given the fragility of the Red Devils’ defense, I expect the visitors to also score. After all, the Citizens scored 13 goals in the last four H2H duels!
