Newcastle Jets are hosting Melbourne City at McDonald Jones Stadium in round 26 of Australian A-League.
Newcastle Jets are playing solid soccer as of late and they lost only 1 of their last 8 games. Before this nice stretch, Jets were winless for 9 games in a row. In the standings, Jets are in 9th place with only 21 points, 6 points away from the playoff spot. Offensively, Newcastle Jest is not bad with 24 scored games, but defensively they have been a disaster with 38 conceded goals in 21 games. In their last A-League match against Brisbane Roar on the road, Jets had 61% of ball possession, 4 corner kicks, 88% of the correct passes, but 0 shots on goal. Jets had a decent game, but in the end, their defense wasn’t good enough once again and the Jets lost this match 1-0. Petratos is the leading goal scorer for Newcastle Jets with only 5 goals, while Millar added 4 goals. As I’ve said earlier, in the attacking end, Jets are solid, but unfortunately, because their defense is shaky are super inconsistent and that is the main reason why Newcastle Jets will not go to the A-League playoffs this season. Newcastle Jets were able to keep the clean sheet only in 3 games so far this season and their record is 5-6-10.
Melbourne City is one of the best teams in the A-League where they are in second place in the standings with 40 points, 8 points less than Sidney at the top. If Melbourne wins this game that difference will come down to 5 points because Sydney played a draw in their game this weekend. Melbourne is scoring a lot of goals this season, but they are also conceding a ton of goals for a team in second place, 32 goals in 22 games. In their last 6 games, Melbourne has 4 wins, 1 draw, and 1 loss with 11 scored goals and 7 conceded goals. In their last A-League match against Central Coast Mariners on the road, Melbourne was the better team with 53% of ball possession, 9 shots on goal, 6 corner kicks, and 81% of the correct passes. It was a great game for Melbourne in the attacking end, but their defense conceded a few goals once again. Melbourne City has won this game 2-4 and has stayed in the hunt for Sydney. MacLaren has scored 18 goals in 19 games for Melbourne City but when he is not playing, Melbourne is struggling with putting the ball in the net. Even though Melbourne is in second place, a place that will get them straight to the semifinals of the A-League playoffs, Melbourne must stay on their toes because Wellington and Brisbane Roar are catching up to them and are now 4 and 5 points away from Melbourne City. I believe that Melbourne City might be an even better team than Sydney FC, but the problem was that they weren’t as consistent through the season and that is the main reason why Melbourne is behind Sydney in the standings.
When Newcastle Jets and Melbourne meet there is usually a lot of scored goals, on both sides. Newcastle has had some success against Melbourne at home, but I don’t see that happening here. I think Melbourne gets a nice win here to stay in the hunt for the first place.
