Brighton & Hove Albion is hosting Arsenal at Amex Stadium in part of round 30 of the English Premier League.
Brighton hasn’t been playing well and they haven’t won any of their last 10 games, both in the EPL and in the FA Cup. During that 10-game stretch, Brighton has 6 draws, 4 losses, 8 scored goals, and 13 conceded goals. With 29 points, Brighton is in 15th place in the EPL standings, and if they don’t win a game soon, Brighton will end up in the relegation zone. In their last EPL match against Wolverhampton on the road, Brighton had 57% of ball possession, 1 shot on goal, 0 corner kicks, and 83% of the correct passes. It’s not like Wolverhampton had a great day, but Brighton’s defense has stepped up and this match ended in a 0-0 draw. Brighton isn’t the team that is scoring a lot of goals, and they scored 32 goals in 29 games so far. Defensively, Brighton is solid, but for a team without offense, their defense must be better than 40 conceded goals. Maupay has scored 8 times for Brighton this season, Trossard and Webster added 3 goals each. Izquierdo is the only injured player for Brighton. Brighton has enough quality to keep themselves outside the relegation zone, but for that to happen, coach Potter must get his team back on the winning track.
Arsenal was supposed to play a midweek derby against Manchester City, but it was postponed due to the Coronavirus. Arsenal has been playing some solid soccer as of late and they have lost onl1 of their last 13 games. Arsenal’s defense was also solid in their last two games where they were able to keep the clean sheet. With 40 points, Arsenal is in 9th place in the standings, 5 points away from the Europa League, and 8 points away from the Champions League. The only chance left to win a trophy for Arsenal is the FA Cup because they got knocked out of the Europa League. In their last EPL match against West Ham at home last weekend, Arsenal had 68% of ball possession, 2 shots on goal, 6 corner kicks, and 85% of the correct passes. This was a good match for both teams, but Arsenal was able to score the only goal in 78th minute and to win this game 1-0. Aubameyang has scored 17 goals for Arsenal this season, while Lacazette added 7 goals. Tierney, Chambers, Soares, Kolasinac, and Torreira are all injured and will not be playing in this game. Arsenal was really sloppy on both ends at the beginning of the season and that is the way their former coach Emery was fired, but since Arteta was hired, there are clear signs of progress in Arsenal. There are at least 5 players in the current Arsenal roster that will be leaving the team at the end of the season which means Arsenal will be really active in the summer transfer window. If Aubameyang and Lacazette both stay in Arsenal, Arteta will not need another striker, instead, he can focus on something they really need, defenders. As far as this season goes, I don’t think Arsenal will be able to reach the spot for the European competitions, but there might be a silver lining. Since Manchester City was banned from the Champions League, there might be another team moving to their place, which means another team will be moving to the Europa League spot, so as long as Arsenal is close to 5th place, they might have a shot at getting to the Europa League.
Brighton didn’t have a lot of success against Arsenal, and with the way they are playing, I don’t see them being successful here. Arsenal is the better team and I think they continue their positive run here.
