Borussia Dortmund is welcoming FC Schalke 04 to Signal Iduna Park in a derby match of round 26 in German Bundesliga.
Borussia was playing a second leg match against PSG in the Champions League earlier his week, which they entered with a 2-1 advantage from the first leg. Rarely this season has Borussia’s offense failed, and they did here, in the most important match of the season for Borussia Dortmund. Borussia has lost this match 2-0 and they got knocked out of the Champions League. In Bundesliga, Borussia is in second place with 51 points, 68 scored goals, and 33 conceded goals. Borussia is playing in a good form in Bundesliga where they have won their last 4 games while scoring 9 goals and conceding only 1 goal. In their last Bundesliga game against M’gladbach on the road, Borussia Dortmund had 55% of ball possession, 4 shots on goal, 3 corner kicks, and 84% of the correct passes. This was a fun game to watch, a game between two teams that are still in play for the title. Borussia Dortmund has won this match 1-2. Sancho is Borussia’s best player with 14 goals and 15 assists, while Reus has 11 goals, and Haaland added 9 goals. Delaney is the only injured player for Borussia Dortmund at this time. Bundesliga is the only competition that Borussia is playing in for the rest of the season, and that could potentially be the advantage for them because both Bayern and Leipzig are still playing in the Champions League. For now, Bundesliga is being played without the audience, but the speculations are that Bundesliga’s leadership with suspending the season on Monday due to the coronavirus, and they would do it in such a manner that there would be no champion this season, and no one would get relegated. All we can do is wait and hope that the situation will improve.
Schalke has been hot and cold this season, but over the last month, Schalke has been in a terrible form and they haven’t won any of their last 6 games. In Bundesliga standings, Schalke is in 6th place with 37 points. This is the last spot that leads to the Europa League, and Schalke has only 1 point more than Wolfsburg and Freiburg. Schalke has scored solid 33 goals this season, but they conceded 36 goals which take Schalke to the negative goal differential. In their last Bundesliga match against Hoffenheim at home, Schalke had 43% of ball possession, 4 shots on goal, 4 corner kicks, and 79% of accurate passes. Chalke had the 1-0 lead at the half-time, but they didn’t play nearly as good in the second half and Hoffenheim was able to tie the game and it ended in 1-1 draw. Serdar is Schalke’s leading goal scorer with only 7 goals, while Amine added 6 goals. Injuries are the big problem right now with Stambouli, Sane, Caliguri, Kabak, Mascarell, Miranda, and Serdar all being on the injury list. All of these injuries are a huge problem for coach Wagner, and Schalke would certainly benefit from the season suspension. This 6th place Schalke is on right now is the best result Schalke has had in years, but unless they start winning some points, I’m not sure Schalke will stay this high in the standings.
Dortmund’s home record this season is 9-3-0, while Schalke is 4-4-4 on the road. Schalke hasn’t won any of their last 6 games overall. Borussia is certainly shaken after their Champions League loss, but I see them bounce back here to stay on Bayern’s tail.
