Paris Saint-Germain is welcoming Borussia Dortmund to Parc des Princes in the Round of 16, second leg match in the Champions League.
PSG will most likely win the Ligue 1 title in France, but for them to advance to the quarterfinals of the Champions League, PSG will have to play their best game of the season. PSG is a remarkable offensive team with 75 scored goals in Ligue 1 thanks to players like Neymar, Mbappe, Di Maria, and Icardi, but their defense is shaky this season. Mbappe and Icardi are PSG’s top goal scorers in the Champions League with 5 goals each and both are expected to be in the starting lineup in this game. Dagba, Choupo-Moting, and Thiago Silva are injured and will not play in this match, while Meunier and Verratti are suspended because of yellow cards. In the first leg of this matchup against Borussia, PSG was solid with 53% of ball possession, 3 shots on goal, 3 corner kicks, and 89% of the correct passes. Despite a solid performance from PSG, they weren’t able to stop the atomic offense from Borussia and PSG lost this match 2-1. PSG is a good team, and the only title they dream about is the Champions League, but as long as they have all the spoiled stars like Neymar and Mbappe who get angry if they are subbed, and the coach without the authority, PSG will never win anything more than Ligue 1, and that is not enough for all the rich people from Emirates who invested a lot of money in this club.
Borussia has won their last 5 games and has conceded only 2 goals during that stretch which is a clear sign of defensive improvement, and they will certainly need it in this game against PSG. In Bundesliga, Borussia is 4 points behind Bayern at the top, but there are still enough games left for Borussia to catch up, but they must stay consistent on both ends. Hakimi is Borussia’s leading goal scorer in the Champions League with 4 goals. Marco Reus is still not ready to play after his injury and coach Favre will not have him at his disposal. In the first leg of the Round of 16 against PSG at home, Borussia had 47% of ball possession, 3 shots on goal, 3 corner kicks, and 88% of the correct passes. This was a pretty even game in the first half and a part of the second half where we didn’t see a goal. But then in the span of 8 minutes, from 69th to 77th minute we saw three goals. Borussia was playing better soccer overall and they won this game 2-1. When Borussia is playing their signature soccer with a lot of fast passes and high pressure, they are the best team in the world, and no one can stop them. Borussia’s problem this season is their defense which had some fantastic games, but it has been wildly inconsistent and that is something coach Favre must prepare his team for here. Borussia might be a fantastic offensive team, but PSG is no joke at home and for that reason, Borussia will have to be focused and extremely cautious.
PSG must attack if they want to have a shot of advancing to the next stage, and I’m sure they will score at least one goal. If that happens, Borussia will have to attack because PSG has the advantage of an away goal. I will avoid betting on a winner here, instead, I will pick something on goals.
