Liverpool is hosting Atletico Madrid at Anfield in Round of 16 in the UEFA Champions League.
Liverpool is back on winning track after the slump they were in for the last few weeks. For most of the season Liverpool was outstanding on both ends, but as of late they are struggling with scoring goals, and Liverpool has started conceding goals, but to be honest, this drop in form was expected and is understandable because more than half of the season is gone. In the first leg of this matchup against Atletico Madrid, Liverpool was the better team with 73% of ball possession, 7 corner kicks, 85% of the correct passes, but 0 shots on goal. Liverpool has lost this match 1-0, but that is a good result for a team like Liverpool to take home. Salah is Liverpool’s leading goal scorer in the Champions League with 4 goals, while Oxlade-Chamberlain added 3 goals. Jordan Henderson is back to full practice and should be in the lineup for this match. Liverpool has won their latest match in the EPL against Bournemouth and with that, they are huge 25 points ahead of Manchester City. I’m sure that Liverpool will win the title in the EPL, but as far as the Champions League goes, if Liverpool knocks out Atletico Madrid, and if they will be able to get back to their best form from earlier in this season, Liverpool just might go all the way.
Atletico Madrid has started scoring some goals, but I feel that it is too little too late. Atletico hasn’t lost any of their last 6 games, and once again in this game, we can expect only defense from Atletico Madrid. In LaLiga, Atletico Madrid is in 6th place, and frankly, they don’t deserve to be any higher in the standings. Thomas Lemar is the only injured player for Atletico Madrid and coach Simeone will not have him at his disposal. Felix and Morata have both scored 2 times for Atletico in the Champions League. Atletico Madrid was once again focused only on defense in the first leg of the Round of 16 against Liverpool and they had only 27% of ball possession, 2 shots on goal, 2 corner kicks, and low 68% of the correct passes. Atletico was defending, defending, and defending some more, but fortunately for Atletico, it paid off this time. Atletico Madrid has won this game 1-0. If you think Atletico’s defense was amazing in Madrid, it will have to be twice as better in this match on Anfield because Liverpool will attack from the beginning. Atletico is not known as the attacking team, and they don’t score a lot of goals, but what Atletico is playing this season is just not enough, not even for the Top 4 in LaLiga. I think that Simeone's time in Atletico Madrid is slowly coming to the end, and we can expect that Simeone will leave at the end of the season, regardless of what happens in the Champions League.
Liverpool is the better team overall and the team that can score a ton of goals if you give them just a little bit of space. Both teams are healthy, but Liverpool is playing better soccer and is scoring a lot more goals than Atletico Madrid. I see Liverpool winning this game and advancing to the quarterfinals of the Champions League.
