Wolfsburg is hosting RB Leipzig at Volkswagen Arena in round 25 of German Bundesliga.
Wolfsburg is playing their best soccer in years this season and they haven’t lost any of their last 8 games, including the two against Malmo in the Europa League. At the moment, Wolfsburg is in 7th place in Bundesliga standings with 35 points, 1 point away from the spot that will take them to the Europa League next season as well, if they don’t win it this season of course. In their latest Bundesliga game against Union Berlin, Wolfsburg had 61% of ball possession, 3 shots on goal, 6 corner kicks, and 78% of the correct passes. Overall, Wolfsburg was solid in this game, and they show a lot of determination and will power because they were losing 2-0, but Wolfsburg was able to get back in the game and it ended in a 2-2 draw. Wolfsburg has so much talent in their team with Arnold, Weghorst, Brekalo, and Roussillon, but it seems coach Glasner can’t find a way to use most of that talent. Weghorst is Wolfsburg’s leading goal scorer with 11 goals, while Steffen added 4 goals. Camacho and William are the only two injured players for Wolfsburg. In the Europa League’s first round of the knockouts, Wolfsburg was dominant and in control in both games against Malmo, and now Wolfsburg will face Shakhtar in the Round of 16 next week. I think that Wolfsburg has a solid team and that they can get to the spot that will take them to Europe next season, but that is their maximum this season.
Leipzig is playing extremely good soccer this season and they are able to keep the pace with Bayern. Leipzig is in second place in Bundesliga with 49 points, 62 scored goals, and 26 conceded goals, only 3 points behind Bayern in the standings. Leipzig hasn’t lost any of their last 5 games, and they conceded only 1 goal during that stretch while scoring 10 goals. Next week is Leipzig’s live or die moment in the Champions League against Tottenham at home. In the first leg, Leipzig was confident, dominant, and was constantly attacking, the only thing missing was goals, even though Leipzig has won that match 0-1. Good news for Leipzig is that Tottenham is in a huge slump and they are not playing well on either end. In their last Bundesliga game against Leverkusen at home, Leipzig was the weaker team with only 37% of ball possession, 2 shots on goal, 8 corner kicks, and low 80% of the correct passes. This game was a complete opposite of everything we have seen from Leipzig this season and it has me concerned because Leipzig wasn’t as fast and precise as they were for the rest of the season. This match ended in a 1-1 draw, but we can expect at least 3 changes in the starting lineup for this match, and most likely some tactical changes as well because Leipzig needs the win here if they want to stay close to Bayern. Timo Werner is one of the best strikers in Bundesliga and he scored 21 goals for Leipzig this season, while Sabitzer added 8 goals. Nkunku has 13 assists. Konate, Orban, and Kampl are injured and will miss this game. I wasn’t expecting Leipzig to be Bayern’s main competitor this season when I was watching them in the summer, but Leipzig is playing really good soccer and I would give them bigger chances to win the Bundesliga title then I would give Borussia Dortmund. As far as the Champions League goes, I see Leipzig advancing to the quarterfinals because Tottenham is a bad team right now and the game they are playing right now is not soccer.
Wolfsburg has had some success against Leipzig, and both teams are playing in Europe next week. Wolfsburg is inconsistent and they are not scoring as many goals as Leipzig does, and for that reason, I will side with Leipzig here.
