Atletico Madrid is hosting Sevilla at Estadio Wanda Metropolitano in a derby match of round 27 in Spanish LaLiga.
Atletico Madrid is finally playing decent soccer and is now on a 5-game streak without a loss. With 8 scored goals in their last 5 games, Atletico’s offense has improved a lot and they actually have a chance in the Champions League if they manage to contain Liverpool next week. In LaLiga, Atletico Madrid is in 5th place with 44 points, 29 scored goals, and 19 conceded goals. Atletico has 11 wins this season, 4 losses, and insane 11 draws this season. In their last LaLiga match against Espanyol on the road, Atletico had 63% of ball possession, 2 shots on goal, 4 corner kicks, and 75% of the correct passes. It was a solid display of soccer from Atletico Madrid, but they should have done more against desperate Espanyol who is last in the standings. This game ended in a 1-1 draw. Morata is still the leading goal scorer for Atletico Madrid with 7 goals, while Correa added 5 goals and 5 assists. Thomas Lemar and Thomas Partey are the only 2 injured players for Atletico Madrid. As I mentioned earlier, Atletico is playing the second leg of the Champions League next week against Liverpool, on the road, and for that reason, I believe coach Simeone will rest some of his players in this game because he will need all the help he can get to try and contain Liverpool. As far as the LaLiga goes, Atletico is outside the Champions League zone, but there are enough games left for them to get back in the race.
Sevilla is playing really well this season and they are in third place in LaLiga standings with 46 points, 37 scored goals, and 27 conceded goals. Overall, Sevilla is one of the best teams in Spain this season and they are deservedly this high in the standings. In the Europa League, Sevilla has knocked out Cluj and will now face Roma in the Round of 16, and interesting matchup for sure. In their latest LaLiga game against Osasuna, Sevilla had 64% of ball possession, 5 shots on goal, 7 corner kicks, and 80% of accurate passes. Sevilla had a 2-0 lead at half time, but Osasuna was able to come back in the second half. Just when we thought match will end in a draw, Sevilla pulled the ace out of their sleeves and has scored a winning goal in 93rd minute. Sevilla hasn’t lost any of their last 5 games, but they also won only 2 of those 5 games which tells me that Sevilla is struggling a bit with consistency, especially in the attacking part. Ocampos has scored 9 goals for Sevilla this season, while De Jong added 4 goals. Ever Banega added 6 assists and he will leave Sevilla at the end of the season. Fernando and Torres are injured and coach Lopetegui will not have them at his disposal. Sevilla’s defense is what is keeping them in the top three of the LaLiga standings, and I see Sevilla staying there because they are playing solid soccer and can compete with both Barcelona and Real Madrid this season. Offensively, Sevilla is not bad, but as I mentioned, Sevilla is struggling with consistency and that’s why they scored only 37 goals this season.
Atletico is 8-4-1 at home this season, while Sevilla is 7-2-4 on the road. The last three games between Atletico and Sevilla ended in a 1-1 draw, but because Atletico is playing an important match in the Champions League next week, I think Simeone will rest some players here. I think Sevilla wins this one.
