Over 2.5 (+150), Under 2.5 (-188)
Atletico Madrid is welcoming Granada to Estadio Wanda Metropolitano in part of round 23 of Spanish LaLiga.
Atletico has not lived up to the expectations from before the season started, and I don’t think they will this season despite having a solid team with plenty of talent. Atletico hasn’t won any of their last 5 games and has scored only 3 goals during that stretch. Atletico is in 6th place in LaLiga standings with 36 points, only 22 scored goals, and 15 conceded goals. Even though Atletico is only 3 points away from Sevilla in 4th place, I don’t see them getting to that spot anytime soon because both Sevilla and Valencia are playing better soccer. In their last LaLiga match against Real Madrid, Atletico was forced to defend from the beginning of the game and has had only 35% of ball possession, 1 shot on goal, 6 corner kicks, and 74% of the correct passes. Atletico was hanging in this game simply because their defense was playing well, but in 56th minute Karim Benzema has scored a winning goal for Real Madrid. So far this season Atletico has had worse than good games and that is the reason for concern. Alvaro Morata has scored 7 goals for Atletico this season, while Correa added 3 goals and 4 assists. Gimenez, Felix, and Arias are injured, while Costa and Koke are close to being recovered and should be in the lineup for this game. We can’t say that Simeone’s time in Atletico Madrid wasn’t successful because they were playing in the Champions League finals a couple of time, they did win LaLiga title and a few more trophies, but the club that invested over billion euros in the new stadium, and over 500 million euros in players over a few years can’t be satisfied with the way Atletico is playing as of late. I read an article today that Atletico’s management is looking to replace Simeone with another Argentinian coach, Pochettino, even before the season comes to an end. I believe that would be a move in the right direction for this team.
Granada has been playing really well as of late and has won 4 of their last 5 games. During that stretch, Granada has scored 10 goals, while conceding 7 goals. Granada has been solid on both ends for most of the season and is in 10th place with 30 points. I’m sure that nobody in Granada was expecting the team to be this high in the standings with half of the season gone, and more importantly, nobody expected them to play soccer this good. Earlier this week Granada was hosting Valencia in Copa del Rey and has won this match 2-1 and Granada will advance to the semifinals of this competition. In their last LaLiga match last weekend against Espanyol at home, Granada had a solid game with 45% of ball possession, 2 shots on goal, 3 corner kicks, and 71% of the correct passes. Granada was able to score 2 goals from 2 shots on goal they had, and their defense was impressive in the second half. In the end, Granada has won this match 2-1. Fernandez and Puertas have each scored 4 goals for Granada this season, while Vadillo and Machis each added 3 goals. Lozano, Vico, Quini, and Montoro are all injured and will not be in the lineup. Granada is a small team that doesn’t have a lot of depth in their roster, but because most of the teams that are behind Granada in the standings are not playing in good form, Granada’s chances of staying in the top 10 are pretty good.
Atletico has never lost a home match against Granada and is 6-4-1 at home this season, while Granada is 2-2-7 away from home. With Granada playing well as of late, and Atletico desperately needing a win here, I’m gonna go for goals here because I think that Atletico is due for a nice win.
