Real Madrid is hosting Atletico Madrid at Santiago Bernabeu in a Madrid derby match of round 22 of Spanish LaLiga.

Real Madrid is the team in the best form in LaLiga and they haven’t lost a game since mid-October of last year. Earlier this week, Real was playing against Real Zaragoza in Copa del Rey and has won that match 0-4. In LaLiga, Real Madrid is at the top with 46 points, 3 points more than Barcelona in second place. Even though Real has scored solid 39 goals this season, I would say that their biggest quality this season is their defense which is playing at an extremely high level and has conceded only 13 goals in 21 games. In their most recent LaLiga match against Real Valladolid last weekend, Real Madrid had a decent game with 63% of ball possession, 3 shots on goal, 5 corner kicks, and 86% of the correct passes. Real Madrid was dominating throughout the match, but they were struggling offensively until 78th minute when Nacho scored for 0-1 which was the final score of the game. Benzema has scored 12 goals for Real Madrid so far, but besides him, nobody else has more than 3 goals in Real Madrid. The biggest problem for Real Madrid and coach Zidane is that their biggest acquisition Eden Hazard is constantly injured and can’t seem to recover fully to gain some consistency and to help Real Madrid score more goals, and they will certainly need him in the Champions League against Manchester City. As far as LaLiga goes, Real Madrid is at the top now, but there are still a lot of games left, and Barcelona is only 3 points behind.

Atletico Madrid hasn’t won any of their last 4 games, and neither their attack nor defense are working right now. Atletico has conceded 8 goals in their last 4 games while scoring only 2 goals. With 36 points, only 22 scored goals, and 14 conceded goals, Atletico Madrid is in 5th place and the Champions League is slipping through their fingers because Getafe and Sevilla are playing surprisingly good soccer. In their last LaLiga match against Leganes at home, Atletico had 55% of ball possession, 3 shots on goal, 7 corner kicks, and 77% of the correct passes. This was supposed to be an easy win for Atletico Madrid, but once again their offense has failed them, and the game ended in a 0-0 draw. Good news for coach Simeone is that the club is working on signing Edison Cavani from PSG, one of the best strikers in the world who would help Atletico Madrid to get back on winning track. Earlier today Atletico has also signed Yanick Carrasco who is another striker which is a clear sign that people at Atletico Madrid realized that they can’t keep up with Real Madrid and Barcelona without a decent striker. Alvaro Morata has scored 7 goals for Atletico Madrid so far, while Correa added 3 goals and 4 assists. Costa, Koke, Gimenez, and Trippier are all injured which is a huge blow for coach Simeone because Koke, Gimenez, and Trippier have been extremely important for Atletico Madrid this season. As I said, the great and solid defense has been Atletico’s signature style soccer, but they have been sloppy as of late on the defensive end, and when we add a lousy attack to that, you get a team that has nothing and is losing points against the weakest teams in LaLiga. We can only hope that Atletico will improve before the Champions League gets back, otherwise, Liverpool will have a field day.

Match between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid is always tough and interesting. There is a lot at stake here where Real Madrid will look to continue their amazing streak, while Atletico Madrid will look to snap out of their losing streak. Even though I’m giving the edge to Real Madrid, I’m not ready to write off Atletico Madrid just yet.
