Over 2.5 (-225), Under 2.5 (+175)
RB Leipzig is hosting Borussia M’gladbach at Red Bull Arena in a derby match of round 20 of German Bundesliga.
Leipzig is probably playing the best soccer overall in Bundesliga this season and because of that they are in the first place in the standings with 40 points, massive 51 scored goals, and only 23 conceded goals in 19 games. Leipzig has lost only 1 game since late October of last year and that was against Eintracht Frankfurt last weekend, quite unexpectedly I might add. Leipzig was the better team in that match with 67% of ball possession, 4 shots on goal, 6 corner kicks, and 79% of accurate passes. Despite all the created chances and the pressure on their opponents, Leipzig wasn’t able to score a goal and has lost this match 2-0. Before this game where they failed to score a goal, Leipzig has scored at least 1 goal in their previous 17 games which is an amazing streak. Timo Werner has scored 20 goals for Leipzig in 19 games and is the second-best goal scorer in Bundesliga behind Lewandowski who has 21 goals. Sabitzer added 9 goals for Leipzig so far. Nkunku has added 8 assists. Konate, Orban, Kampl, and Cunha are injured and will not be in the lineup for this match. Leipzig has signed a young Spanish superstar Dani Olmo from Dinamo Zagreb last week, a player that will make Leipzig even more dangerous and bring them another dimension offensively. Another great thing about Olmo is that he can cover a huge portion of the field on the defensive end, he is a modern two-way player that was wanted by all the big teams in Europe. In the Champions League, Leipzig will face Tottenham who is not playing well at the moment, but nonetheless, Leipzig should be really careful in this matchup.
Borussia M’gladbach is probably the biggest surprise in Bundesliga this season, I mean, I knew that they are a good team that is playing nice soccer, but I didn’t expect them to be in the chase for the title. M’gladbach is in third place of Bundesliga standings with 38 points, only 2 points behind Leipzig at the top. Borussia has scored a lot fewer goals than the other teams in the top four, but their defense has been equally good, and they conceded only 21 goals. In their latest Bundesliga match against Mainz at home, M’gladbach was dominant with 71% of ball possession, 6 corner kicks, 5 shots on goal, 82% of the correct passes. Borussia has won this match 3-1 and has stayed in the hunt for the title. Plea is M’gladbach’s leading goal scorer with 7 goals, while Embolo and Thuram each added 6 goals. Bennetts, Bensebaini, Jantschke, and Lainer are injured and will not be in the lineup. M’gladbach might not have strikers like Bayern, Leipzig, or Borussia Dortmund do, but they compensate for that with amazing teamwork on both ends of the field, and that is what makes M’gladbach so dangerous. Bundesliga is the only competition that M’gladbach is playing which gives them the advantage against the other competitors for the title, and they will certainly need every bit of advantage M’gladbach can get, because of all the teams in the top four, M’gladbach has the least depth. Some would say that 36 scored goals in 19 games if good enough, and it is, but taking into consideration that the other three teams that have their eyes on the title have all scored over 50 goals, you gotta ask yourself if 36 goals are actually enough. It might be enough, but M’gladbach will have to up their defense to another level, and that is not an easy task for coach Rose.
Leipzig and M’gladbach have played 7 times against each other with Leipzig winning 5 games, while 2 ended in a draw. Leipzig’s home record is 6-2-1, while M’gladbach’s away record is 4-1-4. I’m giving the edge to Leipzig because they are better offensively and are playing at home, but I will rather pick something on goals here.
