Leicester City is welcoming Chelsea to King Power Stadium in a derby match of round 25 of the English Premier League.
Leicester is having a fantastic season and is in 3rd place in the EPL standings with 48 points, 52 scored goals and 24 conceded goals in 24 games. Leicester is pretty far from the top of the EPL and Liverpool who has 70 points, but the second place is within Leicester’s reach because Manchester City is just 3 points away. Leicester has been struggling a bit throughout the January and they got knocked out of the EFL Cup earlier this week against Aston Villa. In their last EPL match against West Ham at home, Leicester was great with 67% of ball possession, 8 shots on goal, 7 corner kicks, and 86% of the correct passes. This was a fantastic match for Leicester which they won 4-1 and have snapped out of their 2-game losing streak in the EPL. Jamie Vardy has scored 17 goals for Leicester and is one of the leading goal scorers in the EPL, while Ayoze Perez added 7 goals, and James Maddison has 6 goals. James Matty is questionable for this match, while Amartey is injured and will not be in the lineup. Leicester is playing really good, fast soccer, and more importantly, they are creating a lot of chances and scoring a lot of goals. All of that started when Leicester signed coach Rodgers at the end of the last season. Leicester is also playing in the FA Cup alongside the EPL, and in these cup competitions you can never know what will happen and with the way Leicester is playing, they certainly have a shot at winning the FA Cup.
Chelsea is a great team, but young and they lack some experience and because of that Chelsea has been pretty inconsistent as of late. Chelsea has lost 3 of their last 10 games, while 2 games ended in a draw. Chelsea is in 4th place in the EPL standings with 40 points, the last spot that leads to the Champions League. Offensively, Chelsea is among the best of them with 41 scored goals, but the defense has been their biggest problem this season with 32 scored goals. Chelsea was playing in the FA Cup last weekend against Hull City and has won 1-2. In their last EPL match against Arsenal at home, Chelsea was the better team with 58% of ball possession, 8 shots on goal, 2 corner kicks, and 88% of accurate passes. Chelsea had the 1-0 lead and an extra player at the half-time because David Luiz got a red card. In 63rd minute Arsenal came back with a goal from Martinelli and that was something Chelsea’s fans were not expecting. Chelsea got back ahead in 84th minute, but just 3 minutes later Arsenal tied the game once again and it ended in 2-2. Certainly, a disappointing result for Chelsea who had an extra player for almost 70 minutes. Tammy Abraham is the leading goal scorer for Chelsea with 13 goals, but he is questionable for this game. Van Ginkel, Loftus-Cheek, and Pulisic are injured and will not be in the lineup. In the Champions League, Chelsea will face Bayern Munich in the first round of the knockouts, a team that is slightly out of their league at the moment simply because they are more experienced and have more depth. I like Chelsea’s game style, and I love what coach Lampard is doing with this team. I read today that Chelsea is trying to sign Napoli’s Dries Mertens in the final hours of the transfer window, and boy would that be a great signing for Chelsea. Mertens is a fantastic offensive player who can score a lot of goals and is capable of assisting even more goals.
Both Leicester and Chelsea are struggling a bit as of late, especially on the defensive end. Games between Leicester and Chelsea are always fun and usually produce a lot of goals and I expect the same here.
