Real Valladolid is hosting Real Madrid at Jose Zorilla in round 21 of Spanish LaLiga.
Valladolid hasn’t been playing well this season, but they did have a few solid games. Valladolid is outside the relegation zone only because there are a lot of bad teams in LaLiga this season, and by bad, I mean not playing good soccer on either end. Valladolid is in 15th place with 22 points, only 17 scored goals, and 23 conceded goals in 20 games. In their last 7 LaLiga games, Valladolid has 5 draws and 2 losses with only 3 scored goals during that period. In their latest LaLiga match last weekend against Osasuna away from home, Valladolid was a disaster with 45% of ball possession, 3 shots on goal, only 1 corner kick, and low 63% of the correct passes. This game ended in a 0-0 draw only because of Osasuna’s bad offense. With only 17 scored goals, Valladolid is one of the worst offensive teams in LaLiga. Sergi Guardiola scored 4 out of those 17 goals, Unal and Plano added 3 goals each. Stiven Plaza is the only injured player for Valladolid, and he will not be playing in this match. Earlier this week, Valladolid was playing against Tenerife in Copa del Rey away from home, and they lost 2-1 and got knocked out of the competition. Valladolid has some good players but overall, Valladolid is a bad team who is playing bad soccer on both ends. I know there is not a lot coach can do if he doesn’t have the quality in the roster, but I feel that coach Sergio is not doing a good job here and Valladolid’s management must make a move if they want to extend their chances to stay in LaLiga.
Real Madrid is playing solid soccer this season and they haven’t lost a game since late October of last year, despite missing some of their most important players because of the injuries. Real is going toe to toe with Barcelona this season and is now in second place in LaLiga standings with 43 points, same as Barcelona at the top. Real Madrid has scored 38 goals so far this season, but the one thing they are doing better than Barcelona is defending. Real has conceded only 13 goals in 20 games this season and is the best defensive team in Spain at the moment. In their last LaLiga match against Sevilla last weekend at home, Real Madrid was solid with 52% of ball possession, 2 corner kicks, 4 shots on goal, and 85% of the correct passes. This was one of the best games this season which Real Madrid won 2-1 thanks to VAR canceling two goals to Sevilla. Real Madrid is in great form since the beginning of the season and if they continue playing like this, Manchester City will have a tough time in the Champions League in a month. Marco Asensio, Hazard, and Bale are injured with the last two coming back next week, while Ramos should be in the lineup for this match. Benzema is Real’s best player and top goalscorer this season with 12 goals and 5 assists, followed by Modric who has 3 goals and 4 assists. What Real Madrid is missing right now is more attacking options because if Benzema is not playing, Real is struggling on the offensive end because Jovic is playing well and has scored only 1 goal since he was signed last summer. And to think Real Madrid has paid over 60 million euros for him.
There isn’t a single segment of this game that could go in Valladolid’s favor here. Real is simply a much better team with more quality, more depth, and is playing in much better form, at home and away from home. I think Real gets a nice win here to stay on Barcelona’s tail.
