Over 2.5 (-275), Under 2.5 (+220)
Borussia Dortmund is welcoming 1. FC Koln to Signal Iduna Park in round 19 of German Bundesliga.
Borussia is playing fantastic soccer in the attacking part of the game, but they have been struggling on the defensive end for most of the season. In their last 4 Bundesliga games, Borussia has won 2 games, lost 1, and tied 1 game. Borussia Dortmund is in 4th place in Bundesliga standings with 33 points, 46 scored goals, and 27 conceded goals in 18 games. In their last Bundesliga match against Augsburg away from home, Borussia had 71% of ball possession, 8 shots on goal, 6 corner kicks, and 87% of the correct passes. Borussia had a bad first half of this game and they were losing 1-0. At the beginning of the second half, Borussia conceded another goal but a few minutes after Borussia was able to score a goal. In 55th minute Dortmund conceded another goal and was not losing 3-1. That was the moment when Borussia’s rhapsody started. In the span of 20 minutes, Borussia scored 4 goals with a hat-trick from Borussia’s newest addition, Erling Braut Haland. Borussia has won this match 3-5. Without any exaggeration, this was the best game in Bundesliga this season. Sancho is Borussia’s best player with 10 goals and 10 assists, while Reus added 9 goals. Delaney, Schmelzer, and Raschl are injured and will not be in the lineup. Haland is a fantastic young player who is a great addition to this team, but another striker is not what Borussia has needed. As I said already, Borussia was struggling, and still is struggling on the defensive end and their priority should have been to sign another good, experienced defender who could bring more consistency to this team.
Koln hasn’t been playing well this season, but even despite that Koln is safe outside the relegation zone, in 18th place in the standings with 20 points. Koln’s away record this season is 2-1-6 and they conceded 21 goals while scoring only 10. In their last Bundesliga game against Wolfsburg, Koln was actually decent with 48% of ball possession, 7 shots on goal, 8 corner kicks, and 70% of accurate passes. Koln was confident on the defensive end in this match and efficient in the attacking part and Koln has won this game 3-1. This was Koln’s 4 straight victory in Bundesliga where they scored 10 goals and conceded only 4 goals. Jhon Cordoba has scored 6 goals for Koln so far this season, while Terodde, Hector, and Borauw each scored 3 goals. Clemens is the only injured play for Koln which means coach Gisdol will have his best players at his disposal. Bundesliga is the only competition that Koln is playing because they got knockout out of the DFB Pokal and this should give Koln the rest advantage until the end of the season where they will fight for every point to stay outside the relegation zone. I believe that Koln has enough quality, and more importantly depth to stay in Bundesliga next season as well. These 4 straight wins in Bundesliga are a clear sign that Koln is improving on the defensive end where they were being sloppy for most of the season, while on the offensive end Koln started being more efficient and with that scoring more goals. To be honest, I’m not yet convinced that Koln’s worse is behind them, but nonetheless, Koln has beaten some good teams recently and I give them full credit for that.
Koln hasn’t won any of their last 3 games against Dortmund, while Dortmund hasn’t lost any of their last 14 home games. Borussia is one of the best attacking teams in Germany, but their defense is shaky at best. I’m giving the edge to Borussia at home, but I think there will be goals in this matchup.
