Over 2.5 (-150), Under 2.5 (+120)
Real Madrid is hosting Sevilla at Santiago Bernabeu in a derby match of round 20 of Spanish LaLiga.
Real Madrid is coming back from Saudi Arabia where they played in Spanish Super Cup. Real Madrid played two games in Saudi Arabia, in the semifinals against Valencia, and in the finals against Atletico Madrid. Real Madrid beat Valencia 1-3 to advance to the finals, and then Real beat Atletico Madrid in a penalty shootout to win their first Spanish trophy in a while. As far as LaLiga is concerned, Real Madrid is in second place in the standings with 40 points, the same amount as Barcelona at the top. Real has scored 36 goals so far in LaLiga which is great, but what is impressive is Real’s defense that conceded only 12 goals and is the best defensive team in LaLiga, alongside Atletico Madrid. In their last LaLiga game against Getafe, Real Madrid had 56% of ball possession, 7 shots on goal, 4 corner kicks, and 73% of the correct passes. Real played solid soccer in this game, calm and patient, and that paid off because Real Madrid won this game 0-3. Benzema has scored 12 goals so far this season for Real Madrid and is their leading goalscorer. Real Madrid hasn’t lost any of their last 16 games. The last one that Real Madrid did loose was back in October of last year. Coach Zidane has changed formation in the last 3 games and players loved it. Real Madrid got more control in the midfield, they are creating more chances, and more importantly, they are scoring more goals than before. A potential problem for Real Madrid in this match is that Ramos and Benzema are freshly injured and will not play, while Bales is still unknown.
Sevilla has been really close to the top of LaLiga for years but can’t seem to make that final step. Sevilla is in 4th place in LaLiga at the moment with 35 points, only 5 points behind Barcelona and Real Madrid. Sevilla is playing well this season, but they are inconsistent in the attacking end, and they lost one of their best defenders Simon Kjaer this week who was bought by Milan. In their latest LaLiga game against Athletic Bilbao, Sevilla was a much better team with 65% of ball possession, 2 shots on goal, 9 corner kicks, and 82% of accurate passes. It was a good game for Sevilla, but like I said they are pretty inconsistent in the attacking end and that is what cost them points in this game. This match ended in a 1-1 draw. Sevilla is also playing in the Europa League where they will face Cluj in the first round of the knockouts. Sevilla is the big favorite in this matchup and is once against one of the main favorites to win this competition that Sevilla has won a few times before. Sevilla has scored only 24 goals in 19 games in LaLiga this season and that is something coach Lopetegui must improve. Ocampos is Sevilla’s leading goal scorer with only 5 goals, followed by Vazquez with 3 goals. There are no notable injuries in Sevilla which is fantastic news for everyone in and around the club. I always like Sevilla and their soccer style, but with the loss of Kjaer, and offensive inefficiency, Sevilla must go on a shopping spree in this January transfer window because they won’t be able to stay competitive in LaLiga for much longer with a roster this short.
Sevilla has had success against Real Madrid in the past, but most of that success came while Sevilla played at home. Real Madrid hasn’t lost any of their last 12 home games against Sevilla. Real Madrid is the favorite here, but I think that the injury of Benzema and Ramos will be visible. Real still has the quality to score a goal, but I think Sevilla will score at least one as well.
